Killed an un-wanted player. Would you have done the same?

So last night I got tired of hanging around Lave looking for pirates. There was just no action to be had. Did a quick rares run, just for fun, really doing it to try and bait out a pirate, but had no luck. But before heading off to bed, I thought I would do some killing at a RES. So I'm in Leesti at the only RES on the starlit side of the planet.. after a while, two other commanders show up. One brand new player in a sidewinder... and an expert pilot (I think) in a cobra. They aren't together... so the 3 of us are just cruising around having fun flying through the rocks and protecting miners from AI pirates.... the usual.

After a half hour or so, after a bigger skirmish, I notice the new sidewinder player is now wanted. The poor guy accidentally shot one of the unwanted ships in the battle, and inadvertently purchased a fine and a bounty. So I started keeping an eye on the cobra player... and sure enough.. after 10 or 20 seconds, the cobra starts stalking him, and starts to shoot him. The little sidewinder pilot is running, and the cobra is going after the kill. It's obvious that the little new sidey player wasn't trying to attack me, or him, it was one of your typical accidental friendly fire incidences that we have all been complaining about, ad-nausium. The cobra player obviously saw this as a target of opportunity (no pun intended) to attack a player risk free.

Well, he forgot to take into account CMDR Holycow following right on his 6, no more than 200meters away in my trusty A rated clipper. As soon as I realized what he was doing.. I let him have it. Took only 10 or 15 seconds to melt his shields and get through his hull. He had now pealed away from the sidewinder, and was trying to manouver his way through the rocks and use the speed of his cobra to his advantage, to try and save his own butt... but my clipper does 440 m/s, so he wasn't getting away. BOOM... cobra pilot is dead, sidewinder pilot saved, and I now had a bounty on my head as well.

The sidey player thanked me, I advised him to be careful with that friendly fire in the future, and I suggested he go pay off his bounty asap, as I would be doing the same.

Would you have done the same? Did I make the right call? I don't like bullies picking on the new kids.

(EDIT:I was in leesti, not lave... i was going back and forth all night)

How did I miss this thread? Well done. You made a judgement call and it was the right one. Live by the sword / die by the sword.

I just watched a guy do this twice to mostly harmless players in vipers who clearly haven't been playing long. After the second time (during which 2 people asked him to not do it for a mere 165 credits) I decided to hang about and next time he was firing at an NPC I "accidentally" drifted in front of his guns and he became wanted. I turned the tables and rekt his cobra's face. Most fun I've had with the game in ages. To his credit he didn't combat log when he knew his time was up.

It was just in-game experience. Countless times I have seen one commander go after another, after he inadvertently hit a police ship during a scuttle. So as soon as I saw the sidewinder go wanted (I'm not even sure HE knew).. I started following on the cobra's tail... literally right on his ass. I was ready. I was already close, because all 3 of us were attacking the same larger target NPC (I'm pretty sure).

I love it - Hunting the hunter. You're like Rambo in space :p

Righteous! I'm glad he decided to face the music, although I suspect he just didn't think to combat log, or even know that he could. Luckily, criminals are often morons.
