Killed in my sleep - maybe

At the end of my session last night, I swapped ships, did a bit of outfitting and closed down for the night. I had arranged for a couple of module transfers, which I expected to be able to fit this morning. Imagine my surprise when I logged on to find myself in a penitentiary. I didn't have any bounties on me, nor did I have any unpaid fines, and the ship hadn't even been out of the station. I didn't get any rebuy screen, nor did I hand myself in for anything.

Below is the extract from my game log, which seems to show that I was under attack while I was outfitting inside a normal Coriolis station in the bubble. When I logged off, I didn't have to wait for the 15 second timer or anything like that. Obviously, I didn't see the incoming messages because I was outfitting. My ship was 100% intact. There's nothing at all about it in the Codex history other than the time I shutdown and the time and place that I started today. The last entry was "sold module" at 23:38.

Has anybody heard of this before, seen anything like it or got any sensible explenation?

Yeah, those cats have been known to take ships out for a "Joyride" every now and then, you know, ramming into other players coming into the docks, or just speeding around inside the station and blocking pads. That will definitely get you a free ride to the Penn.
 
It seems that this is what kicked it all off. I was scanned on the pad inside the station while handing in my missions from the other ship. Honestly, gov, I was completely innocent - no bounties and no fines, though I had been shooting the controlling faction in the CZ, so they didn't like me very much.

This does look weird indeed, from my limited knowledge of the log file contents.

I suggest logging a ticket with FDEV Support and including the logfile - I'm sure they'll be able to help. You can do that over here: https://support.frontier.co.uk/tickets.php
I don't really need any help or compensation. I'm just trying to understand how this happened. I think a bug report might be more appropriate, but I see so many bugs in the game now, that I can't see that being much use. They must be inundated. I can work round most bugs, but getting your ship impounded while you're logged off and finding yourself in a penitentiary when you've done nothing wrong just because they don't like you is going a bit too far.
 
Weird indeed.
It seems that handing out missions and bonds for the opposing faction made you hostile with the ruling faction.
Scanning inside the station seems weird.

They couldn't attack you since you were docked, but after scanning you are a criminal that handed himself in and you got deported to a prison station.

Then your best bet would be to send your log file to Customer Service with an inquiry. They're very helpful.

But so far it sounds like the controlling faction turned hostile to you when you turned in your mission(s). That normally means they'll kill you on sight... though I've never heard of anyone being attacked while they were in the docking bay, which does sound pretty weird.
 
Looks like he basically combat-logged. BURN HIM!!!

...IIRC, it is possible to be "attacked" on the pad, and even inside the hangar. When I logged on during the Gnosis Incident, I was rather startled to get an "incoming caustic missile" alert while still in the hangar.
 
Had something happened recently. Accepted Massacre missions from an opposing faction against the controlling faction in the system. There was only one landing dock in the system, an outpost. After completing the missions and turning them in with the combat bonds, I became hostile to the Controlling faction, and they began firing on my ship while it was still docked. I could hear the laser fire and all the screens in the dock menu showed their hostility. I wasn't at all that concerned at the time because I was docked and I know you don't receive damage while docked, but I knew that when I was ready to leave, it would have to be a fast getaway. Was in a souped up Chieftan so I wasn't all that concerned. It had 1700 shields. And I was able to get away before losing a ring of shields. Now, if I had logged off while still docked, then what happened to you would probably be what would have happened to me. I'm glad I decided to exit the area before logging off.

I was multi-crewed at the time with my alternate account, and I had shared a couple of the Massacre missions with that account. It was fortunate that my alternate account had better standing with the Controlling faction, since he was able to fly into the system, dock and turn the missions in without a hassle. But since he was just sitting in the cockpit the whole time providing the extra pip, he didn't kill anyone so I don't guess he got any negative rep for just turning in the missions.

This sounds right.. but attacking on the pad, inside a station is a bit extreme.
 
Maybe, it was because you were 'thinking about' doing some bad things, when your modules arrived. Therefore, the thought police, took things into their own hands.

Just a thought: Were those modules you were waiting for, clean?
 
There is a long standing bug where system security will turn hostile to you and attack for no reason - no bounties, no fines, nothing. It usually happens (at least to me) when I am fighting an NPC, usually a pirate lord mission target, and they drop in to 'help', and suddenly you realize that two of the three security ships are shooting at you, not the wanted NPC. I have had it happen on a couple of occasions in a RES too.

This sounds similar, although for sure I have no idea how you can be destroyed while you are in outfitting.
