Killing Anacondas/Pythons with a Viper?

I'm bounty hunting in an Anarchy system with lots of big ships. My Viper isn't fully upgraded (most of the modules are B/C/D, Power Distribution is A) and my 2 fixed Beam Lasers & 2 gimballed MCannons are worth around 150.000 CR.

Killing Cobras/Vipers/ASPs is no big deal, Federal Dropships already start to be really really tough.

But I'm scared to attack Anacondas or Pythons. Once I managed to get a Python down to 30% hull but had to flee because I was out of ammo/shield cell banks and my hull was down to 10%.

Is the Viper even good enough to kill the biggest ships? Should I change my attack tactics?

I play with my Viper as well, in a similar fashion (bounty hunting) and I have never been able to defeat an Anaconda in a head-to-head encounter. But, there is a way to do it (quite easily): RESOURCE EXTRACTION SITES! I just lurk in gas giants with Rings (many of which have RES where miners work). I roam around a bit and wait for WANTED people to show up. I credit farm really fast in a couple of systems: CHAMBO and LTT 3542 (or something similar near SOL).

All you have to vs WANTED Anacondas is this: remain at a distance where your beam-lasers and Multi-Cannons (i tried many setups and these are my favorite by far) can work and when the Anaconda targets you hide behind an asteroid. The key is this: At RESs Federation ships will swarm to your aid REALLY fast and help you damage him.
So far i have helped take out 4 Anacondas, 2 of which gave me a bounty reward for 80k+ credits!!!!

how many days does it take to kill a big A that way? Lol

Well just come back from a cannon sortie and vs a cobra its 3 or 4 hits once the shields are down with cannon, vs an Anaconda it does take a few minutes (for me anyway), not very long though. Shield cells and chaff let you keep in nice and close. Its very pretty to watch...

This setup kills Anacondas and Pythons pretty easily:

Thanks for the screenshots, I bought the MCannons that you have and noticed a huge improvement. Killed 2 Anacondas and got 90k CR, nice!

Does it matter where you put the weapons? Lasers on small hardpoints and cannons on medium or swapped, what would be the difference?

Yeah I will keep this now, 2 fixed Beam Lasers & 2 gimballed MCannons. Makes so much fun :)

P.s. Thanks for the advice selecting FSD as a target. Killed one of the Anacondas within 2-3 minutes!

Edit: Damn, I have several questions and can't find any good answers online. After upgrading half of my Viper modules to A I'm a little confused about some of the other modules. Maybe you guys can help me out?

1) Bulkheads. As a bounty hunter, should I stick with the Lightweight alloys or upgrade to a Mirrored Surface Composite? Most of the damage I take is from lasers. But I'm not sure if the difference is that big? It's 9T heavier, would make my Viper 10% heavier and less manoeuvrable.

2) Sensors. I have C sensors (2T) equipped with 5km range. A sensors (5T) have 6km range but are heavier and consume more power. Is it worth it for an additional km in range?

3) Fuel scoop. I have D class 3 equipped with 100/s efficiency. How do I know if a more expensive fuel scoop would be better? Does the rating or the class effect the efficiency? Or even both? Do I have to try it out?

4) Shield cell bank. I have 2 A class 1 shield cell banks installed, there are also class 2 shield cell banks but with higher weight (2.5T instead of 1.3T each). Are they really better?

5) Shield generator. I got a cheap one with C rating with higher optimal/max hull mass than the most expensive ones. I don't get what's better, how should I interpret the stats?

Bit of a necro but never mind:

1) Upgrade your bulkheads if you often have your Shields dropped. If you have enough shield cell banks you shouldn't need to. Repairing hulls is not profitable practice, anyway.

2) It's not the range that's really important, but the fact that higher grade sensors make gimballed and turreted weapons track better (I think so, anyway). If you only run fixed, stick with D class.

3) Rating and Class both affect efficiency, but Class is more important then Rating, ie, A2 is not as good as B3. This holds true for all modules, I think.

4) See above. Higher Class units don't seem to have many extra charges, (My A1 has 4, my A2 has 5 and my A3 has 6 charges) but each charge is more powerful. You may even get to the stage where you are wasting charge because your Shields are fully charged before the banks have finished their work. Keep and eye on it, or test with a friend.

5) The stats don't really help you make a buying decision. Go with your gut, or test with a friend. I just use the best I can afford.

What i usually do with anacondas is i stay at about 1.4km away from them and just circle around them, even while they're facing and firing at me. Just use Lateral downward thrust and keep him in the center, use shield bank cells to keep your shield up. use thrust backwards if hes getting too close, and thrust forward if hes moving away. The nice thing with anacondas this way is that its easier to hit their Power plants that way. I've blown up anacondas at around 60% just by focusing on their power plant.

anaconda's are pretty doable since they're fairly slow, but i haven't had much success with pythons yet. The beam cannons are nice, but they consume so much energy. You might aswel go for gimballed Pulse lasers and keep the fire up with both the lasers and the class 2 MCannons. My viper is already pretty beefed up, and i remember dying fairly fast the first time i encountered an anaconda in it, but right now Anacondas don't prove to be much of a threat aslong as you can maintain your distance

Yes. Maximising angular velocity while keeping your nose pointed at your target is a fantastic way of fighting the bigger stuff. Having your flight assist hotkeyed and set to toggle, and learning to fly with flight assist off, means you can switch back and forth between on and off rather quickly and if you do it right, it will vastly increase the efficiency of your angular movement against the target. Flight assist off also allows for rapid attitude changes if you know how to pull it off - hint: it involves reversing your thrust to a certain degree as well.

As an addendum, doing it this way, I've killed 'condas and pythons with my trusty Eagle as well. The Viper is easymode in comparison :p
