Killing Anacondas/Pythons with a Viper?

You should always assume a Class A Power Distributor: they give such an improvement to all-round ship performance and are so ridiculously cheap that they are a no-brainer even at 5x the price. I even put them in my unarmed trader ships. If you can't afford a class A PD for your ship, you can't afford your ship.

The op specified he had enough for a pair of gimballed beams only, so I doubt he had a class A power distributor :p

Context is fairly important ;)

I'm bounty hunting in an Anarchy system with lots of big ships. My Viper isn't fully upgraded (most of the modules are B/C/D, Power Distribution is A) and my 2 fixed Beam Lasers & 2 gimballed MCannons are worth around 150.000 CR.

Killing Cobras/Vipers/ASPs is no big deal, Federal Dropships already start to be really really tough.

But I'm scared to attack Anacondas or Pythons. Once I managed to get a Python down to 30% hull but had to flee because I was out of ammo/shield cell banks and my hull was down to 10%.

Is the Viper even good enough to kill the biggest ships? Should I change my attack tactics?

Yes, the Viper is able to destroy Anacondas. Useful Tactic is hit and run while focused on their powerplant.

Power is determined by power plant. Available weapon energy is determined by PD. PD is 1/10 cost of PP and makes every ship better. If you do not gave enough power to run a weapon you need a PP (expensive) if a weapon keeps "overheating" (running out of energy) get a better PD (cheap).

Can confirm Viper can definitely take out Anacondas, killed 2-3 myself yesterday. Mine's pretty near fully upgraded, but it should work with slightly less than that, too.

The OP actually specified the following:

You must be thinking of a different thread...

I agree its possible to kill an Anaconda in a Viper flying solo. Best way I've found is to stick your ship in reverse and hit it with 4x multi-cannons from 2.5-3k as the Anacondas lasers don't do enough damage from that range but yours do plenty. Target drive/shields, Once it's shields are down and your very low on ammo, you can ram your ship into the Anaconda to get it's hull down. Be sure to save some ammo to finish it off as I found that you don't get the kill/bounty from ramming it to death. However, with enough upgrades, you'll find that it will be dead before you run out of ammo.

So targeting the FSD is more effective than targeting the powerplant?

And I'm not sure about 4 lasers weapon config? Shouldn't I go for 2 cannons and 2 lasers?

Have been running A rated Viper with 4 fixed beams successfully for several days.

I switched from all gimballed weapons a while back after two consecutive anacondas that endlessly fired off chaff. I couldnt touch them. The 4 fixed beams are lots of fun and have taken out anacondas and pythons (although the AI seems to be getting smarter this last couple of days).

I have just switched to 2 fixed class 1 beams and 2 gimballed cannons as an experiment. Yes I know canons were nerfed but believe me they are satisfying things to fire... With A rated kit you can fire the beams pretty much constantly.

Reminds me of clay pigeon shooting :)

how many days does it take to kill a big A that way? Lol

I killed a python in my viper yesterday with 4 stock pulses, it took 10 minutes, but he died. Just now, though, had to run from an Anaconda because he kept lighting me up with Missiles, and I wasn't making much of a dent in his shields. I'll have another go at him though.

This setup kills Anacondas and Pythons pretty easily:

Or just spam shield cells

@CMDR Brock You are using A2 shields.
I noticed a huge improvement in shields going from an C3 to a A3. Are there reasons you chose the A2?

You really advise people to ram them? I killed a Conda few hours ago. Last approach was full front. When it started exploding I had one ring of shield and full hull left. Accidentaly rammed into it end exploded right away. Can not recommend. 250k of piled bounties and some stolen rares to ashes....

But it is doable. Few moments before I had killed a "Dangerous" Conda with that same viper.

Class A PP/PD/FD/Thrusters
Gimballed Multis (size 2), fixed Beam Lasers (size 1)

Only thing I hate about the Viper is that i can't even carry both a KWS and a FWS without going negative power when deployed. Even with that Class A PP. Pretty much not so awesome.

yeah and cost only 500-600 credit each. I use my cobra 2x gimbaled medium multicannon 1x small gimbaled beam laser/1x small dumbfire missile.
Works well.
