KIT-642 Freedom Class surveyor... what is it? What can I do with it...?

I run into this megaship, beautiful, giant... said I could scan it, and so I did... gave me a bunch of targets to "interrogate", and so I did...

Some of the targets gave me sub-targets to scan, but I couldn't do much more and nothing happened. Sorry, but I'm a obviously new to this. What was I expected to do?

Thanks for the quick reply!

I had actually read that and hence why went through with the scan hoping to not get turn into space dust... I ask because I couldn't find the name of the ship I was in front of (which probably means it's just not up to date) and I couldn't really get any of the info they mention on that site...

I don't have limpets, are they required for anything at all with this ship? To make matters worse, I just lost connection to Frontier servers... :(

That's a fleet carrier as far as I can see from the name alone. KIT-642 is the ID and "Freedom Class surveyor" is the name the player gave it.
You can't do anything with it like you can do with megaships but you can dock at it and use services that are installed. Be careful though because the owner can always send it somewhere else and you may end up in the middile of nowhere.

It's actually not one of the carriers. There's a carrier in this system as well, the "Event Horizon QLH-B3W" from "CMDR Dave_Fall_Out". Awesome name for a ship, but like a homage, seems like a dead ship as well... I docked, but there's nothing in it.

This other ship is one of the MegaShips, I just can't figure our what I can do to take advantage from the find... thanks anyways.

Edit: and is not possible to dock on this one.

Some of the subtargets (cargo bays) can be cargo scanned, and then use hatchbreakers to retrieve the cargo. Except in very specific circumstances it's not worth doing this because you'll be under heavy fire for a few tonnes of cheap rocks, but there are occasional uses for it as a few of these contain cargo not easily obtainable elsewhere.

Some of the comms transmitters can be hit with recon limpets (it's sometimes worth having two recon controllers as they may have two attachment points and it's much quicker to do both at once). Again, you'll get shot at a bit but it's a slightly more interesting way to get some G5 data materials.

Shouldn't be detected as long as you remain cold or in SR. The cargo is usually junk though. It would be great if the devs could revisit some of the stuff created during the Sandro Era, some very good ideas that where never implemented fully. Almost feels like, tick box, move on to the next feature. Small changes can make a big difference, those ships should be filled with interesting cargo, and more fleshed out game loops involving those megaships.

Got it, thanks. That's what I thought, that without the limpets there was not going to be much I could do.

Thanks for the help. I've just been playing for a few days, so I'm still learning and have not gotten to what G5 data materials are... that will be a question for another time. I'm sure I'll soon be reading about it... :)

You're talking about Mr. Dorn's, erm, unusual tastes, right?

That's probably the one most people interact with, yes.

I used it to get some Power Convertors for a tech broker unlock in Colonia without going back to the bubble.

When Lave was in lockdown during the wars, I think a few people took advantage of the Lavian Brandy in the holds of some of them for a certain other engineer.

Beware that according to some recent bug reports even with limpets it will no work (cargo canisters stuck in the doors of cargo bays)

I thought there was a FC with the tag Event Horizon as part of the DSSA?

Well... actually, there's currently a bug with megaship cargo bays - so, right now, no, you can't actually get cargo out of them.

If the bgs in the system is in the correct state (really variable atm, but several options exist), you might find attack or defend scenarios arise every so often - usually a few minutes after dropping in.

Normally it starts with a Comms local message about "Sol Starways" then after 0-180 seconds, pirates/raiders drop in to attack or raid the megaship. Then security/defenders come in too. It works a bit like a conflict zone, with normally 3 waves of pirates.

As the villains arrive, the megaship Comms a distress call that you can choose a side on. Defend is destroy every bad guy, but targeting isn't working very well atm. Attack is either to disable the ship by killing the power capacitors, or steal cargo from it, which is pretty broken too atm.

Other than the scenario functions being "as intended" broken at present, which is a shame, as the megaship often kicks out dozens of LTDs and other cool stuff, the scenarios are really good fun imho. I guess I normally go for defence though to collect bounties - PM me if you want any more details as I've been doing a lot recently.

Doing the defence is more fun than going bounty hunting in a Res for me at present, but it's far more intense than a Res! The bounties will be for the 'owner' of the megaship, which seems to be the controlling faction, or that of the security ships.

The above mostly holds true for installation sites as well, but they are less formulaic in approach, as they change hands with the bgs faction that currently owns them, so are tougher to determine whether a scenario spawns or not, and I've struggled finding useful info online about both types of scenario-site, megaship or installation.

A good defence scenario will kick out 1 - 1.5 million in bounties depending how many bad guys you personally kill, and last about ten minutes (fifteen with the recycle and wait I estimate), so imho are pretty good. Also fun to go with, and are great for eye candy!

As above, PM me if I can give you more details, as their success really does depend on bgs states, so tell me the system and site name if you want to play one.

Have fun commander, and fly sleazy,
The Hat :)

PS:- apologies folks for the text wall!

Thanks for the detailed reply, this is awesome and the details are very helpful!

I did not get an attack-defend scenario unless I missed it. I play in VR and I've noticed that the comms tab is very hard to keep in focus with VR (and that's where my complains end regarding VR, this is why I play the game). But since I've focused on bounty hunting, I like what you are describing and I'm definitely going to try this again.

I'll ping you and see if we happen to be in a close system so we give it a try together, although I'm sure our skill levels will be very different.

The name of the ship is "KIT-642". Megaships don't have separate names and ID codes.

My observations are that the prefix for megaship code-names is usually linked to the faction that owns it. Specifically, "KIT" is presumably the first three letters of the home star system of the faction that owns it.

Thanks for the clarification. I learned a new thing today! :)

I cannot confirm because I'm not in that system anymore, but will keep an eye on it the next time I run into one of those ships again.
