Know whats great about that trailer today

I also saw commanders standing still watching spacecraft go by, so it can't be all about FPS missions.

Like someone else has said, probably best to wait for more detailed updates about what's coming, instead of intepreting a minuscule amount of 'gameplay footage' as being the whole expansion.

A bit sad to see their limited time and resources spent on this FPS add-on. I just hope they don't forget about the rest of us.
There will be the new planet rendering and the new exploration on foot for a start. I’m also not expecting FPS to happen in most stations, especially pvp, there are plenty of places for all of us!

If you blinked you would have missed it and rightfully so because there wasn't much there.

Also, content providers can't rebroadcast and comment on it without turning off the sound because Frontier used the Major Tom song.

What I want to see down the line is examples of combined arms conflicts.

Of course combat will feature prominently in the ad material, Elite was always at its core a space shooter, but they have also said Odyssey will have something for everyone.

Sounds like a threat almost. I imagine it will be something that takes ludicrous amounts of time to do, so many players get stuck doing it and voilà "something for everyone".

Also, there are different types of suits (3 in total for each role) and I doubt they will be added to have 0 added value in game.

I'm not strongly disagreeing or anything like that, but just pointing out the flaw in your statement here. FDev has put in a number of items we can acquire that are either useless or nearly so.

Various powerplay reward items, some guardian unlocks, etc are very useful - but also equally true is there are some that are clearly irrelevant at the moment.

So I don't think just because Fdev adds multiple roles and multiple suits for each role means it automatically follows they must have good value. Based on prior history, I expect actually more of the same - some suits will be great, some will just be meh, and some will be what fdev - this thing is useless.

What if tha plant didn't want to be scanned wouldn't you be violating/ganking the plant?
Best form a 'plant rights' movement to better take care of the plants, ensure their well-being and rights. This will totally go quite well*.

* This will totally be a disaster.

I kind of originally had the impression this was about walking on planets and engaging with them in some way.

Now I just have the impression its purely all about guns and shooting other commanders.

Will just have to wait and see what else turns up I suppose.
The trailer is aimed at the games award audience, not us. There was no ship stuff, no new ships, no new srvs, no plants, no plant scanner, no deep space exploration gameplay.

Not because those things or some of them aren't coming, but because it wasn't for us. It was for shooty kids watching a games event.

What is interesting is that trailer did not reveal ANYTHING we didn't know. Nobody is going to tell me they dont have lots to reveal. That trailer just wasnt the place to do it. Planets looked great though.

I don't think that is the case. This is just an exciting aspect of Odyssey that FD judged would be cool to show at the awards, to be taken in context with the other information that has been released, like the biologist thing.

I was looking forward to Odyssey but after this trailer.. I don't know.. Mixed feelings.
Pros:
  • Atmospheric planets and blue skies - YES!. But it looks like it is only ice/rocky worlds. No 'Avatar like' green paradise planets.
  • Walking inside bars on stations and picking missions - YES!.. Freelancer was horrendous with its bowling ball planets/stars but it got one important thing right. You docked into a station, you felt you were somewhere else thanks to hanging around the bar/hangar in person. Relatively simple development wise but added a layer of depth to the immersion.
Cons:
  • The whole FPS thing. Not sure if slapping Counter Strike to Elite is the right way to go. The whole value added proposition of Elite is you get to experience space like never before and no finished game has so far in the history of gaming offered a 1:1 scale of our known galaxy + calculated the rest of it. But FPS? There are literally thousands of FPS titles out there to choose from.. why would anyone choose Elite over them? What is the added value of it? I don't know the answer but I wouldn't want to be the product owner of it with the goal of convincing players this is THE FPS to invest your time in.
  • If you thought you had to grind/engineer ships to play competitively, wait until you see the grind/engineering of all the stuff you can put on a character before it can shoot/defend/run competitively :)

A: "Look, just go over there and scan that plant please."
B: "You mean the plant that has someone camping behind it with a shotgun? That plant?"

Respawning
A: “I told you it was a bad idea to go on the planet surface!”
B: “How was I supposed to know the plants would eat us? I was too busy looking out for the guys with guns you were paranoid about!”

The plant you scanned:

True .. but in how many of those games can you high wake on the neutron highway out to 400bn stars and trillions of planets, visiting your wingman's carrier before you Guardian boost into an anti-Xeno rescue operation ... :D

Like most things you'll find some people will specialise, some people will do enough to get by, others will probably do things in unusual and unheard of ways.

Good points you make but (to cheer you up really) I see only pros .. you can completely ignore Odyssey if you want to stick to flight.
