Ships Krait MK II or Phantom for Mining w/ decent jump range?

I would like to know if there is a way to engineer one of these ships to mine but also by not sacrificing a lot the jump range below 15yl with empty cargo, and maintaining a somewhat decent defense for pirates. Considering MK II can hold 2 fighters, wouldn't be the best ship for defense?

Any guide or pro tips?

If you want all the mining tools (4) any ship with 5 hard points will have limited offensive capability, fighters are useful but they're not going to compensate for the loss of 4 weapons and unless you have a commander crew member only one can be launched at a time.

My current medium miner is based around a Challenger, even with all the mining tools it has decent offensive capability and if you're deep core mining only can gain some additional DPS (a deep core mining Krait would work a lot better TBH)

Here's a modification of my explor-a-miner Python loadout for a Krait Mk II. Same cargo capacity but a smaller fuel scoop and no FSD booster.
Your only defense in this thing if attacked is boosting as fast as possible out of the ring and jumping into SC, ideally before your shield drops.

Never even considered the mining lance for deep core mining. Once you break up the asteroid to get at those tasty core deposits, how many chunks does the mining lance break off?

Seems strange to see people recommending deep core builds that are using only two abrasion blasters and thus halving their take per asteroid.

In my opinion weapons for dc mining is useless. As I see, you meet with pirates only when you arrive in the hot spot. They're scan you, if find nothing they're leave, and never turned back. It's true 99% on my mining. Only one time I needed to run, when I logged out with good in my cargo. Logged in, they're found something in my cargo and opened fire.

Personally for fast asteroid mining I think the Imperial Clipper with 192 cargo and only 4 hard points works well with the latest update. Store all your mining gear locally at a station from basic mining lasers to the latest greatest. Once you figure out what works for the moment add some serious beams to take out pirates. Fast, maneuverable and it even comes in the latest iridescent paint job. I used a Clipper mining in the past to make engineers happy. It is still the go to mining ship when a player wants to be efficient with mining versus making a career out of it with a Type-9/10. With the new toys making engineers happy is a lot easier getting painite.

That's fine if all you ever want to do is single-session mining. it's when you want to stay in a ring across multiple sessions, and so have to log in (or jump in) once you've already acquired some cargo of value that the lack of combat hardpoints becomes a problem.

Yes, you're right. I do mostly single session, because my cargo is just 96t. I fill it with few roids, then leave to sell them an replenish limpets/ammo.

After testing this build on open, and getting interdicted multiple times by real pirate commanders I have to say the Phantom is superior to the MK II for mining in open simply because of its ability to outrun most human pirate ships. When you can permaboost to 591 with a fully ladden cargo hold about the only pirate ship that can give you issues is the imperial clipper. I outrunned pirate Cutters, Krait MK II's, and even another Phantom (I suspect it was much heavier/slower due to full PvP combat build with HRM's and reactive armor). I carry two APA's for dealing with the random pirate NPC while mining. Use weapons of choice here if you don't have/like APA's. 104 ton cargo hold is not bad considering the speed. and jump range. The Python or MK II may be better miners for PG's or solo, but if you're in open, and plan on evading pirates this is the way to go.

Here's the build, enjoy!

Well if you're mining with a Krait either;
  • You can easily outrun Pirates with even modest Engineering.
  • You don't have enough Cargo space to be out too long.

If your ship is full of priceless metals and gems, don’t run from NPC pirates. Just hit escape and reload. Even if they start to scan you, the 15 second danger countdown is plenty of time for you to safely quit and reload. And pirates don't spawn every time, so you can just reload until no pirates spawn (it's certainly quicker than jumping into supercruise and dropping back into the ring).

I tried a Phantom, Krait Mk II, and Python, and decided on the Python: the Python is slightly slower than the Krait, but has 9 internal slots. If you really want a Krait I’d go with the Krait Mk II: The Krait Mk II has a slightly larger internal slots, and one more hardpoint (in case you'd like to have a weapon).

This is my mining Python: https://coriolis.io/outfit/python?c...BmUEZgA4QFMCGBzANikI4SEhQlA==&bn=Python Miner
The Krait Mk II is faster and has slightly higher jump range and a bit more maneuverable, though a Python with engineered dirty thrusters/drag drives is fast and maneuverable enough to be a fun miner. And a 36ly jump range is plenty to find pristine hot spots outside of the bubble.

NPC pirates are never the issue for me. It's the human variety that you have to be wary of, and I enjoy playing in open so I always prepare my ships to be able to handle that. I can't run away from anyone in a python, and the MK II is just barely fast enough to maybe keep them at range.

The chances of someone coming across you when you’re mining is virtually impossible, unless it’s a well trodden system, and you mine directly in the middle of the hotspot. If you submit to an interdiction, you’ll have a lot of trouble outrunning a commander with a PvP ship, regardless of what you’re flying (even if you do outrun them, you’ll probably need some repairs). The real game is being smart in supercruise. [edit] one exception where having a slightly faster ship might help is to quickly get some distance between you and a station rammer (but fortunately, station ramming is pretty uncommon, and it only happened to me once, in the beta test)

It's not when mining that I've encountered pirate CMDRs, is at the sell systems that you gotta watch out. I've been interdicted multiple times trying to approach the best sell price stations. I've managed to get away all three times I was interdicted in my phantom, but when I was mining in the python prior to that I had no choice but to submit and comply with their demands.

Ah, so it handles better in supercruise and easier to win interdictions in the Phantom. That makes sense. Most PvP/pirate ships can boost way over 500m/s (a full armed Imperial Clipper can boost over 600m/s with only the thrusters engineered), which is fast enough to do a lot of damage.

When one drops into the system, put the main star directly behind, so no one can get behind you to interdict you, and check your comms panel for other commanders. I just got my 2 miners engineered, and when I start mining more, I’ll make sure to avoid systems that have been updated in EDDB too recently, or just sell my goods during slow hours.

No, it's not what I meant. Phantom does hande good in supercruise but it's its ability to boost to 591 fully loaded that lets it get away from any pirate ship that's not a Clipper.
