Yeah they said that.

They already came up with some better racing designs for the Mamba and Courier.
I'm curious to see if we'll get some more better designs for the rest of the ships.

I assumed this would be on paintjobs both old and new.

I've a feeling those might be being upgraded; they're missing everywhere but the rest of Tactical is present. My impression over the last few months is that Graphite at least is highly sought after. I doubt they'd withdraw it, although they might increase the price over the others, which a short delay might make less noticeable. But that's paranoid thinking

The Alliance Challenger is missing some paint from the store. One of my ships is wearing it, just not available to buy, which is odd in itself

Would it be possible for you to list which paints are under maintenance or otherwise intentionally not present, then we can tell you which are missing from the store in short order. It might help to keep the paranoia down.

That's what I understood too.
Perhaps they'll have to re-render the old ones and will do so in batches.
Maybe the ones missing right now will be better, we'll see when they're available again.
I certainly hope so.
