Krait Phantom: A new Asp Explorer competitor!

Well, after four years it looks like we are finally getting an alternative to the Asp Explorer, and it is the Krait Phantom.

The beta Coriolis site has the ship with it's internals up now, and it looks to be a real close match stat wise versus the Asp X, only better honestly?

The Phantoms internals are: (UPDATED 11/12, THIS IS OFFICIAL NOW)

Hull Mass = 270T

CORE:
C7 PP
C6 Thrusters
C5 FSD
C4 Life Support
C7 Distributor
C6 Sensors
C5 Tank

OPTIONALS: 1xC6, 3xC5, 3xC3, 1xC2 (8 total, max cargo cap 188)
HARDPOINTS: 2xL, 2xM
UTILITIES: 4

You'll notice that the FSD match the Asp X's but the hull mass is 10T lighter, and so with engineering for lightweight and given similar exploration trim the Phantom jumps just a bit MORE than the Asp X:

Asp X: 70.65lys

Krait Phantom: 72.18lys

Same fuel scoop size, same 5H FSD booster, but the Phantom flies about 25m/s faster and has one more internal to spare.

Plus it's a real looker:

Yep, it might be time to retire my four year old Asp X for a bit!!! :D

We'll have to see how accurate that is - the default config on the Beta site is riddled with errors (class 5 fuel tank in class 4 fuel tank slot?? etc.....)

If those are accurate though, it's a very decent all-round craft. Long jumping, fast, agile, lots of capacity, plenty firepower....

Yeah, the beta coriolis has a few errors. I think that fuel tank is wrong, and it will allow me to put an SLF bay in the Phantom when we know it can't use them per Frontier.

I hope it's accurate, but maybe my happiness is a bit premature. Still, keeping my fingers crossed, and from what we know it should shake out very close to what beta coriolis has up now.

I think there may be optional internal errors as well.

I'm sure I heard/read that the Phantom has more cargo space than the MKII?

Do we know the Hull Masses are accurate?

No, we won't know if its accurate until we see it in the beta next week, or if Frontier tells us first. Frontier has said its lighter than the 320T of the Krait II though, so 280T probably isn't far off the mark if its wrong at all.

Aww man. I literally just finished my krait build and took her out on a spin. While the ship looks amazing and has a great jump range I don’t want to keep switching my ship around every time there’s something new. I’ll stick with my krait mk2 but I can definitely see this being the step between aspx and anaconda for exploration.

Oh i think Krait Mk2 was and is very competitive alternate for AspX, dunno why didnt you consider that, Mengy? Also, why didnt you make the comparison to Krait Mk2 since thats the most logical ship to compare?

If the hull mass at beta.coriolis is correct, it may actually be a very-very good exploration ship with it's max engineered jump range only 2 Ly less than DBX, but much better internals and scoop capability.

Well, if these stats are correct, it seems that Phantom truly is quite great alternative for AspX and for Mk2 also.

Phantom:

Downside is you cant have fighter bay if you want C5 Guardian booster. You can fit a fighter bay but then you have to settle for C4 Guardian booster.

Krait Mk2:

https://s.orbis.zone/vhh

Fighter bay but one internal slot less.

AspX:

https://s.orbis.zone/vhi

No fighter bay and even less internals than Mk2.

As i see it, AspX has nothing but jump range, but what comes to internals, Phantom is the clear winner. Then of course theres the compromise with the fighter bay.
When going on long expedition like DW2, i wouldnt go without it as its a nice addition and breaks the traveling nicely when you find some cool canyon.

From those three, i would choose between Krait Mk2 and Phantom. AspX has never been an option for me anyways. :D

C5 Life Support
C6 Distributor
C4 Sensors
C4 Tank (seems small, may be an error?)

HARDPOINTS: 2xL, 2xM
UTILITIES: 4

You'll notice that the FSD and hull mass match the Asp X's exactly, and so with engineering for lightweight and given similar exploration trim the Phantom jumps just a very teeny tiny bit less than the Asp X (due to the larger life support):

Asp X: 70.65lys
https://coriolis.io/outfit/asp?code....EweloBhBGA2EoFMCGBzANokMK4fiIA==&bn=WILDSTAR

Krait Phantom: 70.62lys

Same fuel scoop size, same 5H FSD booster, but the Phantom flies about 25m/s faster and has one more internal to spare.

IF those details are correct than:

Class 4 fueltank can't be right. A ship with only 3 possible jumps that is NOT a pure dedicated combat ship like FDL and Mamba? Seems like a mistake for me here. Surely it's just a typo.

So let us see:
- downgrade to class 6 PP from class 7
- smaller internals but same amount
- still fighter bay? (I can outfit one at coriolis, thought it would go?)
- one class 3 hardpoint less
- much more hull integrity
- tiny fueltank
- faster than MK.II
- smaller than MK.II yet it needs a class 5 life support???
This all together makes the impression, that it will be another combat purposed ship with some multirole capabilitys. More or less a better Crusader (which is an epic fail ship IMO). At the end it's not what i've expected and i'm not sure if the few extra lightyears as an explorer compared to the MK.II would be worth the downgrade to this tiny fueltank.

In sum i'm not impressed by the new ships.

Krait MK.II in exploration outfit makes 58.95 ly , 409.45 ly total unladen
https://s.orbis.zone/vht

Krait Phantom in same outfit makes 66.91 ly , 244.25 ly total unladen due to the tiny fueltank
https://s.orbis.zone/vhy

It's a different of around 6.5 ly max range with 5t fuel left if those stats are correct. Not bad at all....but this tiny fueltank would definitly ruin it completely.

For exploration i'd rather take the Orca. Beats both Krait's in all manners.

The MKII jumps 9 lys less than the Asp, so it's not a real competitor for a fringe jumper like me. The Phantom though, NOW we are talking!
