Newcomer / Intro Krait Phantom For a Bus?

While the engineering can be a faff I can put up with it quite well as it is possible to ignore it for weeks on end and acquire stuff for when you do have/want to do a bit more in the course of fairly normal play and long jump range is generally useful.
Passengers however I am not prepared to take further than a handful of light seconds from a burning station to a rescue ship, more than that and the nagging and whining from the cabins starts to make me think of dumping the lot of them.

Engineering is entirely optional if you're doing passenger missions in the bubble: 25 LY vs 36LY won't make a huge difference other than how may jumps you'll need and, I guess, if you don't have a fuel scoop whether you'll need to stop to refuel. Excellent side benefit of the FSD engineering is that you use less fuel, though ... so ... yeh ... personally I think the FSD engineering is a no-brainer and you don't have to go crazy and shoot for G5 right off the bat, G3 makes a big difference and you only need common materials for that.

That said ... engineering your ship how you want it is part of the game. Just as buying bigger/better ships and A-rating modules is part of the game. Only difference is that you have to do something different (collect materials, complete unlock challenges) rather than just plain old missions for cash. Personally I see that as a good thing since it is something different and I enjoy planning my engineering as part of my shop builds. Okay, so some of the unlocks are just "go fetch this" or "go mine that" but at least there is a specific goal (unlock the engineer) rather than just chasing the almighty dollar!!

@tolm You make some good points. Getting into engineering has certainly forced me into areas of the game that I had not explored because I could do everything I wanted to without the assistance of engineers.

I love these threads where the OP makes a post then disappears...

When OP says "bus" I think bulk transport missions. If that's the case then Anaconda or Python fit the bill. You can put enough First Class cabins in the Conda to accommodate 54 passengers with more than enough range to reach destination and have it outfitted for adequate defense. It can also do Sightseeing, but I usually prefer my Orca for those.

If a Conda is a bit out of reach, the Python can be stuffed with First Class cabins as well and one-jump to bulk transport destinations. The Python is also the ship of choice for the Robigo run, which it can do in under 12 parsecs...
