Lack of content and features means we simply lack imagination!?!

Are people suggesting that the Frontier team aren't working hard enough to produce game content? I think they've all been working balls out personally.

If you do think they are working hard, what else can they do?

They don't have a huge pot of money to throw development into overdrive and hire 200 more people.

Let me state this as clearly as possible so there is no confusion, the game is lacking content. However, you can't build Rome in a day. For the time Frontier have had in development and the funds available, they have done an outstanding job. They have been absolutely relentless in improving the game.

When I see a thread like this - with legitimate concerns - what I really think people are saying is, the game should not have been released this early. I don't agree with this at all.

If the release date got pushed back 3 and then 6 months later, you can guarantee that this forum would have been full of people shouting from the rooftops declaring how Frontier "lied to us" and that the game will "never be released". You really can't win.

I love being able to play Elite now and wouldn't have wanted to wait another 6 months. Its been a great Birthday and Christmas present for a disabled guy like myself.

Its not like Frontier are intentionally dragging thier heels with content. This stuff is hard and most be taking longer that they thought.

I hope the people who like the game - but are fed up with its current state - stick around and see this thing through with us.

Counldn't agree more.

I've been gaming since the early 80's and still do to the present day. I personally agree the game needs to be better to succeed long term, but compared to recent AAA fare, it's a pretty solid product, and far better than some very high profile recent releases (I’m looking at you Watchdogs).

I also find it fun to play there's enough in there now to hold Interest for the next 6 months if you don't get caught up in the race to the finish mentality.

I am trying to understand what people are expecting from this game though? Our expectation aren’t always realistic given the developers constraints.

My understanding is that this is a long term, minimal cost development cycle and I’m not to expect it all on day one.

Will this development model work? Or will relinquish ED into the history of forgotten games. Personally I can't answer that, but I still want to see how this game looks in six months to a years’ time.

At that point I’ll pass judgement. For now I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt that they are committed to ongoing support and development.

I agree with everything you have said. I got my money's worth already and I think the game has a bright future.

I expected some intro and a bit more info for the new players frankly because it's just kinda standard fare, and it's not really resource intensive. The community would have done it for them had they asked. When your dropped in a sandbox I think everyone's first thought is what's the boundaries? What's the rules? It's frustrating to burn a couple of saves finding that out, more so when not all of the systems are fleshed out and some are buggy. So it would have been wise is all I think anyone is saying.

The problem is merely pointing this out is like putting a target on your back around here. It frustrating to get shoehorned into "your being impatient" "your just whining" "gg" and whatnot. People are just saying it needs this to be a better experience for new players. And it of course does. They get frustrated come here and vent, which is taken as whining and they are shown the door. Most of them just don't get the mechanics and are confused as to why you would need external sources to play what is at the end of the day mechanically a pretty straightforward game.

Also I think they need to make a choice, deep systems, or more character. Deep systems provide their own enjoyment, and character to cover rng can be a simple as the dialog boxes from CK2, or little icons with character traits next to their names. Anything really. It feels to me like they tried the middle road for now, planning deep systems further down the road and figured people would patiently wait or buy it anyway and just take their word for it. That's not a gamble I would have taken. It's like they have never met the internet..

It's like watching your friend try and shoot himself in the foot but evrytime you try and tell them it's not a good idea the crowd yells "if you don't like it you can leave!"

So we have a list of features we expected, or make a comment on how we feel about certain mechanics, and get barraged with lines like "you just lack imagination" or "you just don't understand Elite: Dangerous" or my favorite "learn to play".

First off, this is release, so lemme spin you a tale. Say a game about assassinating people in an open world with a vast storyline that spans hundreds of generations has been planned to release, it has sandbox elements, but has promise of a living world and a fascinating story you take part in release. then it releases you can only walk around the town, stab evil villain X, and find treasures hidden through out this open world map....and its fresh and full of bugs, game-breaking bugs, some so bad it makes the game look horrific and barely playable....would you be upset, would you complain, would you feel like you have been ripped off, not to mention day one micro-transactions......

Do you get the hint now, release isn't supposed to be open beta, or early access, if I released a new car without brakes and promised "coming soon" after a year of prototyping said car and hyping it up, I imagine I would have a few lawsuits on my hand. We as consumers don't go to wal-mart and buy a pack of toilet paper that says "6 rolls" and then comes with three and a note saying "Coming Soon".

Release is meant to mean full product, and is expected to be finished, not the prototype or the "Base Platform".

And I can understand some people are trying their best to go "It's okay....I just spent a ton on this(grits teeth), its fantastic(painful smile)...." but please, understand this is the Era of early access and many of us are feeling the burn pretty hard right now, and simply trying to wave off peoples feelings isn't helping the situation, and plugging your ears and going "la la la la" isn't going to hide the fact we are upset and had higher expectation.

Elite has been known to be a single-player game, now that it has been MMO-tized many of the original "Elite" features simply won't do, the bar is raised, and the many years of change that have come in the gaming industry has made our expectations grow.

TL: DR:

Sometimes our complaints are justified, and many people feel like they just pre-ordered "Colonial: Alien Marines" and I imagine many of those who are calling out the "whiners" wouldn't complain if the features we are whinging about where put into the game, I suspect you would love them as much as we complain about not having them!

I apologize for such a long post, but thanks for making it through to the end if you did!

Valid. <snip>

Seen someones post and yet again people belching you lack imagination, so I am bringing this discussion back from the depths of the web!

Unfortunately there are a fair few people that feel they must defend this game to the nines.
They'll argue against pretty much anything that in any way is critical of the game, even constructive criticism or people pointing out bugs that FD recognize as bugs.

I think this stems from the fact that they feel they must justify the purchase of the game to themselves and that they see any criticism of the game as criticism of themselves, hence the reactions you get are a bit OTT. There is also Tribal behaviour to consider. Once a person believes themselves part of a tribe they will defend it vigorously. Similar thing you see with football teams, political parties, console wars etc...

OR:

Maybe some people have a different opinion to you and like the game. I paid 40 pounds for this game and consider it money excellently spent. Dont project your opinion on to everyone else and mistake subjective opinions as objective fact.

This is probably the first true PC game I have bought in some time, I cant think of another game that really leverages the PC as a gaming platform like this one.

Amazingly the devs are going to add even more stuff. FIST PUMP.

Ya. Its not wrong to expect more. They did word what to expect 'at release' as if they paid AT&T to write it up. So what we dont have right now which some of us expected, is actually just 'soon' and we cant fault them for it because they didnt explicitly state when.

Im not rushing through the game though as if there is an ending... Because the only end i can think of is if i become totally disinterested.

Fix the ganking and everything else is all good ( they will fix the bugs ). This can be a great game if they fix it. I see a lot of gankers like to defend their poor behavior here in the forums.

My advice to people who don't like it is to either give it more time and see if its something you aren't doing or understanding that's affecting your enjoyment, or simply don't play it and move on. It's a game, not life or death.

I think those who played the original probably like it more than those who didn't. It was wire frame only, and despite being amazing for the day it did require you to fill in some of the blanks. Those filling of blanks are perhaps what some other people see as design flaws or there being "nothing to do." The game has a massive arc. You have to accept you aren't going to get excitement all the time or master the game inside a week. There will be add-ons which will change the nature of the game.

If you really don't like it, no big deal.

money well spent for me. nothing to justify, i can afford it and will buy SC when and if it comes out. floats my boat and i have spent a huge amount of time playing it. not perfect but heading in the right direction IMO. cant expect everyone to agree and strongly regret the fanboy label and being called a fool (have reported that one)
I dont play PC games but i love this one

Frontier has to add more features for players to make their own fun and increase the available content during the next few weeks and months. The current build doesn't have much content or variation keep most people entertained for months. The features need more depth.

By improving he social features then players will have fun with each other so the amount of content is less important.

I've been sitting on a pretty middle of the road system for 5 or 6 years, this and SC are what motivated me to upgrade my PC. I do not regret that decision and I'm more than happy with ED currently. I would have paid $50 for the game even if there wasn't more content coming. There are PLENTY of things to fix and polish of course, but most of them don't/haven't affected my play style so I can't complain or comment.

Wow, welcome to the modern age wer indi. games evolve over time..embrace it and rejoice..nyone who can play ED and think..boo hoo im soo disappointed is surely super cray...u can quote me on that.
