Lack of Night vision combined with new "darker" game unnecessarily limits game play

It's bizarre that in the year 3020-whatever I can't walk into a shop and buy a night vision kit for my suit (or buy a suit with one, you know, installed), but instead I have to sneak around surface bases stealing out of cupboards in order to... - I dunno - how do you get NV on a suit?
Someone made a free briefing higher up in the thread about exactly this. It may or may not be accuate.

What?? How the hell did you do that? I want one. I must have one.
Pioneer supplies has pre-upgraded suits - G2, G3. I somewhat accidentally bought two G3 Dominators, and one of the engineering slots was filled in both (one slot free). I also got a G2 weapon - the engineering slot was open. I don’t know this for sure, but that might indicate that they always leave one engineering slot open on those suits.

If the choice of upgrades is random from all possible, I guess the odds of hitting Night Vision in particular is low. There’s an engineering thread here somewhere which might say which engineer does that, and with details for unlocking.

There’s a thread on pre-upgraded equipment. It’s first-come, first-serve. Shops get restocked, not sure if we’ve figured out when.

There's some annoying bug that sometimes removes the flashlight if you change suit pieces or colors on loadouts. If your flashlight doesn't work, change the chest piece, or the suit color, and it will work (most of the time). Ironically this is more prone to happen if you have the deluxe version and applied the pioneer suit.

Best to check when leaving the ship if the flashlight is working. If it doesn't, change some suit piece or color in the loadout editor and try again.

Night Vision, the feature that is standard on all our ships and SRVs, is locked behind an Engineering mod for suits. And it has to be installed on each suit individually.

In a "New Era" where everything is darker because of an updated lighting model, we have to unlock the ability to see in the dark that already exists in the vehicles we've been piloting for years... 3 times.

I can understand that the devs were desperate for things to add to the suits for engineering mods, but....

By the end of the alpha phase one I was so tired of stumbling out of my taxi into pitch blackness that I had trouble motivating myself to play for the rest of the alpha.

Night Vision should have definitely have been standard on the suits.

I much prefer real darkness, but I do think enemy NPCs should have different AI-- so they can't magically see the player in the dark (unless of course they are perhaps commandos or something that have night vision in their suits).

Indeed if this could be the case night would add a very different dimension to approaching missions, adding to stealth.

Is it the case that detection range is lower at night?

I didn't understand why night vision wasn't standard in suits back in the Alpha, we wear suits that cost more than an SRV or starship, but have to specially engineer the night visions systems that are standard on them to each of our suits individually? I know asking for logic from FDev is a losing game, but still...

The Dominator has a flashlight!? I'll have to play with chest pieces. Lack of NV is nonsensicle, so is Engineering on foot. It's apparent they paterails increasing in amount rather than rarity is the devs adding time gated grinds. Ship engineering makes sense, foot does not in any way.

Exactly. The Torches are useless, and it is interesting that I can buy a better LED flashlight that fits in one hand from a hardware store for 20 dollars. In the 34th century, people who work in space have to use braille while working on the dark side of any structure.

It's especially egregious that night vision on a space suit is considered such an advanced feature in the 34th century that it requires an eccentric genius engineer to install it on a suit? This is beyond dumb.

I think the reason they didn't give night vision to suits by default is because Night Vision is actually a very large benefit to stealth combat. Your flashlight/Torch makes you extremely easy to see (Your shields do too).

It's only an advantage when one person has it and others don't. If all suits have it, then it's the same as if everyone was in a illuminated environment. The advantage is only there because some people will be able to gain an advantage to enable better ganking of new players. If they are concerned over unfair advantages, why not just add Night vision as standard like it is in Ships/SLF/SRV?
