Landed 5000 LY away from bubble to take this screenshot

We have all of those things. That's what RemLok is.
Your helmet and suit provide you with emergency environmental conditions, not just oxygen. You are in the vacuum of space. You need heating, pressure, cooling, and something to breathe.
There is only a limited availability of resources so that's why there's a timer. If you pay for more resources you get a longer time.
Can't have a film over a broken canopy for the same reason, but even more so, that we don't fix the windows on jet aircraft with clingfilm.

I feel that the canopy should be repairable, again if you have an SRV you can gather the materials and craft a new one, furthermore, I hope later when we are able to get out as a person we will be able to make repairs to the hull.

As an explorer there should a series of mechanics that should allow an explorer to harvest and utilize materials to fix and maintain their ships.

And before anyone says "But combat..." a simple fix for this is to only make it possible to use when your out of combat, make hull repairs take time and multiple patch jobs each to work it back up to 100% using synthesis. Again using synthesis to be able to craft "nanobots" along with a supply of silica to allow them to build the canopy and fix it while it's still in the frame.

It is. You can repair it with an AFMU just like any other module now.

Toxic cargo also damages it, just like any other module now.

You can only repair a cracked canopy, not a blown canopy as the OP stated earlier as he did have two AFMU's on board.

Oh? Sorry, didn't realise (or read, i guess). Just assumed it repaired the same as other modules (from 0%)

Great post, actually brought a shiver to my spine, looking at that and imagining being 5000 light years from home :(

Good luck in your next life....

No problem, I'm sure its a distinction that will come as a surprise to many commanders far out in the black :) I didn't know either until the OP mentioned it.

I believe you 'should' be able to replace it though even if the current limit makes structural sense.

Maybe as part of the extended looting/crafting system coming "Soon" there will be a canopy replacement element - it would be good to be able to have the chance to recover from this situation.

Actually this was spine tingling moment.
At first i thought "I have 2 AFMU's I will be flying to next system in no time'
After a 30 seconds I was still furiously trying to repair the broken canopy and shortly after realized the inevitable.
And then when I was making that screenshot I started to hear pilots/mine heavy breathing and sounds of suffocating.
Horrible experience but I haven't feel emotions that powerful in any other game yet. Frightening.

I might not like some aspects of Elite but yesterday I was shocked how 'believable' this game can be and how one can get attached to virtual pilot sitting in virtual cockpit.
