landing take off tutorials for larger ships?

Seeing as I agreed about the fuel tutorial, this has been churning away in my head for a while now since I got my python, and next ship is probably going to be one of the "fat b'stards" that by all accounts are difficult to squeeze through the letterbox.

any chance the landing and take off tutorials could let us "choose" a larger ship to practise without the threat of huge rebuys?

We have that on rare occasions, called Beta, and when ships are discounted in said Beta. I am sure there is a station in Beta that has huge discounts. Next Beta(possibly) will be 2.4,but don't know when.

A pity we don't have a Simulator, right?

Like a public nano-Beta, except without the Beta Testing. Just Players testing things out for themselves with easy access to Equipment to take on a test-ride.

In beta everything costs 10% IIRC, there is a special station in shinrarta dezhra called jameson's memorial where you can buy every module and ship available, but you have to get at least one elite rank to get the permit.

Back on topic just put a decent shield, four pips to SYS and try :) its not that hard. By putting 4 pips to sys you will strengthen your shield by more than two times.
 
If you want to practice, planetary stations with low gravity is a good stress free way to go. So far as letterbox maneuvering, navigating through the asteroids in rings wil give you a good feel for the ship. Just make sure you cut it so close that you occasionally hit things to know where your boundaries are.
 
As I posted in another thread:

Undocking the larger ships is best done by leaving your joystick alone - just raise the ship using vertical thrusters and so you will remain parallel to he station's axis. When central, rotate only then sideways thrust if you must - you know you are lined up true because the marker on your radar display for the station centre becomes a thin rectangle - above or below turns it into a triangle. As long as you don't rotate on any axis (pitch or yaw) you will easily glide through without a scratch.

i dont yet own a big ship though i would like to one day. tutorial would be helpful to say the least.
 
Its not that bad if you make a natural progression, for me it was Asp- > Python -> Anaconda. I admit I felt the same trepidation and even fitted a docking computer, I thought I would land manually and if I had trouble would let it take over, but it was nowhere near as bad as I thought so dont bother now.

The only things that was maybe a little different is on an Anaconda you have to line up higher than usual, almost so it looks like you will scrape your head on the mail slot, and the cutter which has massive drift.

I think I have flown all the big ships and when getting used to them just take it nice and steady, times when I screw up is when im generally messing about :)

i have crashed in the beginning but now have no issues landing large ships. My solution is to fly by instrument panel rather than visuals - and go by the landing rectangle on the radar. Thruster bindings are essential though.
 
The mail slot is HUGE and if you go fast enough your ship will be automatically pushed to the center of it.

I'd still like to "practise" first before risking a huge rebuy, hence the desire I express in original post. And it also doesn't help with going in.
 
I'm going to be really harsh here, but IMO if you're at the stage of the game where you've got a big ship that is a tight fit through the letterbox - and by that I mean the Corvette, Cutter and Beluga, not the Anaconda, it shouldn't have any trouble at all - you should already be proficient enough at docking that the size of the ship is no longer a problem for you.

If you have a problem docking one of those three ships, I suggest that you may not be proficient at docking, and not ready to have one of those ships.
 
Put 4 pips in shields and nothing can go wrong even you hit afterburners and smack into the letterbox.

Pay attention to the cockpits position in outfitting as guide to where the cockpit is, for example the anaconda cockpit is very high up at the back.

I agree with this. Buy a docking computer, pay attention to how it docks, switch of the DC & copy it. Then sell the DC once you're good enough. Not tutorial required imo.

I know full well the comment was unhelpful, but that's my reasoning as to why I don't think there should be a tutorial for big ships.

As others have said more helpfully, go slowly, full pips to shields and you shouldn't be risking a rebuy. Or test it out with a docking computer. By the point where you have a big ship you should be able to practice with minimal risk by doing it in the main game
