Laser sounds

I know you cant hear sound in space... but anyone else feel laser sound effect needs a makeover? You flying some big bad ass space ship. deploying awesome looking high tech weaponry and at go time all you get is this puny...

"pew pew" Pew pew pew"

Its almost comical.

We cant use the realism argument.. if we are going to talk realism, having max speeds in space makes no sense and the type 10 being a le to hover in 6G with verticle thrusters would propell at ludacris speeds virtical in 0g. I just feel the puny sounds are.....pathetic.

Heres some sci fi laser effects done right

I could never understand the hum sound when I fire a rail gun, but I suppose that's the ac electromagnetic charging that I hear. Anyway, they make a nice explosion on the target.

Beam lasers are more intense than the pulse lasers. Sounds (;)) like you are ready to step up to those now.

You would hear the weapon itself attatched to your ship making noise.

But we arent talking realistic here... this is a sci fi game with capped cruising speeds in zero gravity and magical forcefields.
True. No point worrying about realism in a game where you can see lasers, park next to stars, and accelerate and decelerate at ridiculous speeds and not turn to mush. Lol

I'd quite like some new weapon sounds.

Frags make the most lame "puff" noise.

The audio team have done an absolutely fantastic job with every sound in the game, except weapons. Lol

Those sound almost comically terrible. Massive bass and treble frequency over drive and nothing in the mid range. Just a load of generic wubs and high frequency rattles. Please, Frontier didn't create Elite's beautiful sound stage so that they could ruin it with that rubbish.

Canonically, your ship creates a soundscape for you based on sensor data. It aids situational awareness, as humans are good at hearing things for some reason. Whoever would have thought.

This. The speakers are cockpit mounted so when you lose pressure the reproduction goes away with it, then all you hear are your COVAS warnings and any sound transmitted through the ship's hull.

Totally agree with OP.... my wife giggles when she hears me fighting with a ship equipped with lasers. She'll usually comment with something like "Oh, how is your Pew Pew'ing" going. Or she'll walk by the room and just say "Pew Pew Pew" and laugh. I've never liked the sound - always sounded like a toy to me.

P.S. - did anyone else ever notice repair limpets literally use a sound effect of a table saw cutting some wood right at the beginning of a repair? My wife LOVES that one as well. "You're in a SPACE ship, why is it cutting wood?"

Can we get a COVAS of her just saying "pew pew" and giggling?

Never mind the sounds...what about the performance.

As a relative newcomer to the galaxy, I couldn't believe that the archetypal sci-fi weapons are conspicuous by their absence in open in PvP rather than the slightly anodyne experience of PvE where anything is viable - yeah C4 efficient beams are pretty good but still rare - imho fixed lasers should be one of the best weapons in the game...there's nothing like the dazzling light show of a full-on combat zone laser-fest as one boosts towards it from a distance.

There is truth to this. I do yard work with earplugs in (some of the mowers I use are noisy) and if I leave those plugs in when I switch to more manual labor, I feel "clumsy". The subconscious uses all sorts of audio queues like the sound of our footsteps, the change of sound source location as we walk, etc. to help us get our bearings and 'feel' our way in our environment. You can try it for yourself - just fit some very good earplugs in your ears and try doing chores around the house. It won't take long before you notice the effect.

In similar fashion, scientists developed a belt for deaf people that converts directional sound to point-specific vibrations on the belt, and it greatly enhanced the deaf person's ability to interact in the world. So for example, if a car is approaching from behind you, you 'feel' it coming instead of hear it coming.

So yeah, there's good science in ED ships simulating sound that would otherwise not travel though a vacuum of space!
