Loved reading the OP. It reminded me so much of when I first got my Vive. I've never had the opportunity to try a Rift, so I'm not even going to weigh in on the differences. All I know is that I love my Vive and it looks great to me. I have a monster of a system and can really crank up the SS and settings, so ymmv.
I've done so many cool things in EDVR, but I think the one thing that stands out so far is when I bought a Keelback just to mess around(and it was relatively cheap). I approached a station with a docking computer, got up out of my chair and used my play area to walk around and stand on the bridge looking out. I'm not ashamed to admit that a tear or two was shed as Strauss began to play while the docking sequence commenced. I felt like I was on the bridge of the Enterprise. I was inside my own sci-fi movie.
Never has a technology, gaming or otherwise, had such a transformative life-changing effect on me as VR. After 43 trips around Sol, I think that's saying something.
