In your controls you can set your forward and reverse throttle to keys. Make sure the setting for throttle is "continuous". (there is a setting for incrimental adjustments)
That will make it so you have to be pressing the mapped keys to initiate forward or reverse movement.
Just make sure you have another key mapped for throttle setting of zero.
Set your throttle to zero before entering the station, then use your forward/reverse keys. It will always drop back to zero when you release the key.
Ergo, you will be at zero when you leave the launch pad. Use the same tactic to leave the station. Once in the clear of the station, you can go to 100%.
I screwed up, (I was at work when I posted) set THRUSTER with mapped key for forward and back. Throttle will stay where you set it. Thrusters will only be applied as long as you are holding the key down.
Ex., if you set your throttle to 0%, pressing the mapped key for thruster forward will increase throttle to 100% until you let off the key. Then it will drop back to 0%.
I'm a lefty so I use the arrow keys. This is a great way to control your forward/reverse momentum in the station for docking and/or combat.
If you are moving forward too fast, just hit the reverse thruster, it will slow you down fairly quick.
Even if you have your throttle set to a percentage like 50%, you can hit reverse thruster and go in reverse until you let off. Then it will default back to 50% forward throttle.
I use this in combat because 50% is the sweet spot for turning, but sometimes you need to speed up or slow down. So when I'm done catching up or backing off, I just let off the thruster and I return to my set throttle of 50%.
