Lave Radio Community Question - Arx for Emotes?

Check out the emotes in Forza Horizon 4.

"Obnoxious" doesn't quite say it, and even those "Praise the Sun!" emotes in Dark Souls gets old really quick.

I was greeted the other day by a CMDR who stopped, did a quick crouch (which I, of course, returned), then stood up and continued on their way.

Made me think we could have a resurgence of Georgian-era style greetings of bow and curtsy - regardless of gender, whoever initiates the greeting does a bow (looking down and up) and those receiving it do the curtsy (quick crouch) 😁
Maybe you're not used to MMO's, but it's very common to give a friendly greeting to other players even if you don't know them. In Minecraft it used to be a sword waggle. In World Of Warcraft it's buffing another player. Yes Elite has the 07 text emote, but your comment seems to suggest you've not come across a random greeting before (not being critical, just making an observation)

It was my first random greeting in the Alpha - normally other CMDRs just sprint on by.

I’ve only dabbled in STO and SWTOR, and I’d rather not see that sort of thing in Elite 😁 Simple (civilised) greetings on the other hand...

How about some of these?

Would I pay for them ... not sure, maybe.

I'd want the "basic" emotes i.e.

  • Wave
  • Salute
  • Point
  • Bow
  • Laugh
for free, but I'd be ok with "expanded" emotes... i.e. the Rimmer Salute, or LLAP etc available for ARX
I agree with Ben that basic emotes should be included FOC.

As for 'expanded' emotes for Arx - why not especially if they include a 'Be Seeing You' emote from The Prisoner (and Babylon 5) and a 'Live Long and Prosper' emote from Star Trek (which isn't subject to copyright).

I would love emotes- Rimmer salute would definitely get my wallet open. Though my wallet would also be open for a Hutton Orbital dashboard mug or for a pet creature that snoozes on the dashboard too, the first of which would be fairly straightforward to make in about 30 minutes in Blender. Why FDev dont think it is worth a tiny amount of developer time to model a Hutton mug that ties in with game immersion is beyond my comprehension.

Why would I want to spend money on this? I play a load of VR games and if I want to wave at someone I would just wave at them, I can't imagine going from that, back to some bizarre monetized puppet show where I am actually expected to play a pound or something, for the ability to wave. It's just too dumb to take seriously, so no.

Also I would only buy something from a developer if it contains content and gameplay, buying pointless cosmetics that are not worth a fraction of a penny sets up a feedback loop for the company that encourages them to just keep developing stupid crap like emotes instead of working on the product.

If FDev decides to add emotes, there should be a set of 6 to 8ish common/basic ones that are included in the game. That being said, I'm not a fan of paying the retail price for a game full of freemium content that must be purchased separately.

Agree.

I might add

Thumbs up (yes)
Thumbs down (no)

to free emotes.

Certain emotes are somewhat required for core functionality; e.g. player interaction. These need to be thought about (perhaps other games can provide a good baseline). Complex emotes can be purchased through arx.

These are great for combat oriented decisions. Might not work for basic social interactions. As with any of these co-speech gestures, they might be culture specific; e.g. someone from country X might not find these gestures as intuitive as others might.

I suppose my main thought was that I don't want "silly" gestures so a bunch of basic hand signals like that could be used quite creatively I imagine. You're right tho, they might not serve their original function.

I'm also closer to "no thanks."

If anything, swtor had certain emotes that were sometimes infinite that had you doing a specific action, playing dejarik, the disco ball with smoke, using a holo terminal like device etc. Maybe for those but definitely not for standard communication ones. Yeah the emotes that were inventory items in swtor. They would have to be like that and that good to pay arx for.

Also swtor has probably hundreds to go and copy if this were to happen..

Okay id probably buy an emote that had you fly around a tiny radio controlled krait around you head. Very nice. Also a party jawa.
