Leaning out over the edge of the Abyss

So I've gone about as far out as I can on the edge of the galaxy to the south west.

Update: That's as far as I can go. There are no other stars visible on the GalMap further out. (Video Here)
I've never been in an area this sparse and navigation is a challenge.
Yesterday I had to spend 4 hours burning off fuel to make a jump, and probably more than 4 hours replenishing jumponium mats.

I have to admit it's a bit scary being out this far, teetering on the edge of the abyss.
I'm constantly worried I won't be able to find a way back out or I'll run out of jumponium and maroon myself.
I'm enjoying being out here though. Just hope I can find a route back without backtracking where I've already been.

That, I find, is actually the most fun thing exploration offers. Getting out to the most sparse areas, and just trying to get as far out as you can, then, trying to find your way back (though EDdiscovery makes it easy to follow your own trail back).

It was even more rewarding before jumponium, plotting your way between the most sparse regions of the gaps between galactic arms, trying to save a 20k LY trip, but actually spending just as much time in the end, anyway... But it was fun, finally finding that route, seeing the star fields slowly get more dense... It was very satisfying.

Z...

Update: I made it as far as possible, which as far as anyone has gone it seems.
Looking at the GalMap I can see no other stars any further out.
Here's a quick (4 min.) video of the view from the edge. https://youtu.be/iC7egXU8FkQ

Top Notch Major!

I headed out in that direction on my first voyage and got horribly trapped. That was in the days before "visited stars" and before I had heard of EDSM. Luckily someone enlightend me and I escaped.

That was the most exciting time of my ED career to date :D

For me the navigation in sparse areas has become one of my favourites.

Every jump watching to scoop only the amount needed for max range, using the "orange hat" all the time to find the route with minimum jumponium usage, checking the type of the next main star when the countdown starts (that is now as automatic as breathing)... Knowing a mistake can get you stranded is part of the fun too.

And, of course, Allitnil was there before... o_O

Since the 7th of August 3303 I've been circumnavigating the galaxy on the furthest edge there is (where the stars stop and there are no more for hundreds of LYs), in a counterclockwise direction. I'm doing this only using jumponium FSD boosts. I started from Notus and after more than 450 boosts -- 200+ of which were only J3 -- I've reached the Arm's End. I intend to continue all the way around until I reach the Notus again. in the same manner, using only FSD injections.

I love sparse areas, I love the edge of the galaxy, and it's what the game is for me. Also, I love SRV driving and since the beginning I've landed 50+ times to collect jumponium mats. My Anaconda is using 18T fuel tank.

And yes, Allitnil and others have been in the most notable areas, but I don't care. It's the journey that counts. I'll make a thread about my travel later when I get back home.

Well done, enjoy the view.

I'm another who enjoys exploring the thin areas. The last challenge was crossing the Perseus Fade on the way back from the edge, running on fumes and watching the synthesis count :)

For me, the most fun I've had exploring in Elite was when I crossed over directly South through the Outer Arm Vacuus, soon after jumponium was discovered. At the time, we didn't know if that was even possible, so that added to the fun too. Since then, we've gotten much higher jump ranges courtesy of the Engineers, and jumponium mat drops were also eventually tripled. On one hand, this made things much easier: on the other, it has become more accessible to other ships, not just stripped-down Anacondas and Asps. Personally, I enjoy the challenge of doing the same in an Imperial Courier instead, and with no SRVs (only a mining laser), I limit the amount of premium jump spells that I can cast. (Build's here, if anyone's curious.)

Sparse area exploration, getting to difficult places is far and away my favourite activity. Going out between arms on the edge and seeing how far above or below the plane I can get, manually plotting the route, managing fuel down to the .01 ly jump, manually calculating distances between stars...what a rush!

Once you have to look for the hats you know trouble isn't far away.
I tend to use the FSD Boost option in GalMap and then select Boost level 1-3. It tends to be faster except when it's hard to follow the route up or down as it disappears out of sight when in a long range ship.

Agree, I never use the hats. I use the boost level on the galaxy map and also check manually the range it reports and the range of the system because on J3 it won't plot even if I have enough range because it plots on the assumption of full tank. I can't use the hats, never managed to make it work for me and I don't miss them. After so many jumps I can visually judge the distance anyway.

Hats????

Are you referring to the pointy arrow thingy you get when activating jumponium from the synth panel?

If so why is that bad?

+1 @OP, it's lovely out there

What do the kids say nowadays: Maps or it didn't happen ;) Just joking of course, but I do love seeing all you CMDRs' maps!

Sweet sweet isolation. Lovely post. Thank you cmdr.
