Legs, 1st, 3rd, or both?

I don't know if this has already been considered by FDev, and or whether it could be changed if the core were to have been the wrong choice, but for me and many others it has to be first person, third person is like asking Lewis Hamilton to sit on the back wing of his car... it's dumb, but not for everyone, many players like the extra info from the third person view and like to watch their chosen body do it's thing, but not for me... again!

So would you ask for first person, third person, or both, and would/could it affect your purchase of a legs expansion if you can't do the one you like?

I'll give my oppinion on that, and most people will hate it... Elite was ALWAYS a space ship simulator, I would prefer to not have legs. But if there is one feature it's missing from it's predecessor its atmospheric landings... If there "have" to be legs, 1st person for sure (most likely what Fdev would also do) because ED always had VR in mind.

I just hope that they spend the dev Time for more usefull things then.
tbh given the timescale and number of Devs stated to be working on Elite, but not the current version I'm expecting both atmospherics and ambulation.

In 2.0 there were a few bugs with the AI that were not fixed because the AI was going to be reworked for 2.1 anyway, so it wasn't worth bothering with apparently. Then 2.1 was delayed, and when it eventually released the new AI literally made the news :)

So I'm thinking something similar for 2020 ;)

Some time ago i would be sure it will be 1st person view only, now i'm not sure anymore....FD changed focus a lot on many things so i think they'll deliver both.

They overcomplicated external cam to avoid taking advatage in combat while delivering arcade 3rd person view for MC, they could do it much simplier and better imo as some flight sims did it (regarding ext view on ship).
I just wanted to see my ship entering station, landing etc from external view (no hud or weapons option to fire) but as a very casual player i never had will to bind those idiotic and uneccessary keybindigs for cam, same goes for FSS....

FD is keen to overcomplicate simple things uneccessary which not only takes their time and resources but drifting some players away (and i'm saying this as long time flight simmer), instead more complex CEM they complicate everything else.
So i think it will be the case with legs too!
Either way i don't care much as long they include basic atmos in 2020 (lifeless mars like planets)

i like the idea of being able to walk around my ships or on a station but i dont think elite needs to go full first person shooter. its always been a spaceship game as crowax said. i would say that frontier should work on adding atmospheric landings and better presentation of the galaxy and its various stellar phenomena. things like accretion disc's around black holes and other dense objects, more bits of flora and fauna to find while exploring, and things like racing. its a sandbox and more stuff in the sandbox to play with is what will make the game better in my humble opinion.

also historical story based missions. seriously the tutorials already show they could. imagine being able to relive cmdr jamesons last mission with modern graphics in full vr.

Once landed perhaps we could access Station/Carrier/Base public logs and watch a 'good' (top quality, not 21st century security camera) replay from different angles... could be fun while we sit doing nothing else, yeah I sit doing nothing sometimes, perhaps a walk around the promenade and watch other pilots arrive and leave.

I think it has to have first person mode, that fits with the whole "you are embodying a pilot" thing.
Given we essentially have ship flight third person view with the camera they'll end up with that too one way or another.

Assuming legs is a paid expansion then I'm curious how the integration with the rest of the game will work - you need people without it to still operate within the game effectively. So, hmm..
Perhaps everyone gets the ability to do some walking around in their ship stuff but they can only get out of the cockpit (or the wider ship) if they have the expansion paid for. That would give everyone something to play with and whet people's appetite to explore further.

Anyway, we'll see :)

I sincerely hope that no existing features will suddenly require the player to amble around the ship, if ambulation is added as a DLC.

Wandering around the ship, without purpose, is probably something that players may do once - per ship - and never repeat.

Requiring to wander around the ship, because "something" suddenly requires it, would be an annoyance to say the least.

I hope is 1st person only.
Reasons:
  • more effort to develop a smart camera that follows your charachter in the proper way and focus on the interactive features.
  • more effort to avoid views clipping throug objects, celing etc. ---> more bugs
  • more effort to make more realistic body animation ---> more bugs
  • unrealistic, this is supposed to be a sim so I want to look with "my own" eyes

My preference is always for 1st person view and being able to aim down the sights of weapons. I think it will probably be both 1st and 3rd with a toggle (if space-feet happens). If its 3rd only then I'll have to give it a miss.

Needs of the many and all that.

Thing like getting too and from the SRV bay seems like a likely change, though perhaps FD would give the option to transition without walking around.

I imagine they would provide some other limited functionality, perhaps we get in ship manual repairs or some sort of engineering plus ability to tinker with modules a bit - something to give players a reason to get up and move around but where this is additive. However additive that is though they'll be people saying they are 'forced' to do it - if you gain the ability to get up and perform ship repairs as an addition to existing functionality they'll be a group of people complaining they are forced to even if they can continue playing without doing that, because it is there I must... Anyway, we'll see :)
