Legs - Lets come back down to earth

I wonder if we will be able to exist in the game without owning any ship at all.
Theres an interesting idea. If so i might start over on a new account to see how much different the game is having to work my way in to space as a civilian determined to become a commander.

Perhaps i could buy a salvaged ship with no core internals and have to acquire each piece separately. Maybe even boost a couple modules here and there and possibly get lucky and one of the mods was engineered...

These are my expectations...

Odyssey is a seperate game entirely, ala CQC...
To play Odyssey you will need to fly to a 'HUB'
Assemble Your Crew
Social hubs spread throughout the galaxy give Commanders the ideal place to plan their next move. Form alliances, procure services, and even find expert support in highly coveted Engineers. These public outposts also help you acquire and upgrade weapons and gear to perfect your playing style.

At the hub you choose a game mode

One Giant Leap
See the galaxy like never before. Touch down on breathtaking planets powered by stunning new tech, soak in suns rising over unforgettable vistas, discover outposts and settlements, and explore with unrestricted freedom.
OR
Forge Your Own Path
Take on a wide variety of contracts and play your way, from diplomacy and commerce to lethal stealth and all-out combat. Diverse settings, objectives, and NPCs offer endless mission variety and a near infinite amount of content to enjoy.

Once you have chosen the game mode you can invite friends

When you click 'go' you are transported via cut scene to a planet, once you've disembarked, you're standing for the first time on an unexplored planet. What can you do next? Here's an overview of what you can look forward to in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey.

The Sphere of Combat
Experience intense first-person combat, kit out your character with an array of weapons and gear, and coordinate with teammates to master a multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge.

You cannot fly yourself to a Odyssey instance / planet, you will get there Via the Hub + Cutscene
I mean, why else would you need a 'Taxi' service at the hub?

Once you have finished your Odyssey game / round you are transported back to the hub where you can board your own ship and leave the Odyssey game mode.

END...

So what are your expectations? Similar? Different? - I think some expectations out there are way over the top.

o7
Nothing like that.

Don't get me wrong, I think at some point in the future the two game modes will 'blend'. Right now though, if I was testing out a new mode, this would be a way of doing it. (But would come clean)

The OP is my expectations, clearly some people have much more grand expectations, which is fine by me.

I suspect now you'll be able to go somewhere without your ship. I just wonder if those would be local flights - like from orbital station to planet surface, or interplanetary, between systems.

I wonder if we will be able to exist in the game without owning any ship at all.
Interesting. In SC this is possible since you can travel onboard other players ship.
For example you have missions asking you to pick up and deliver boxes but the mission giver doesn't care if you do that with your ship or onboard someone else's.
I wonder if it will be possible in ED too

O
I must confess, I do fear that Elite: Odyssey is actually Elite: Dust 514. It's an unfounded fear, but a fear nonetheless. In other words, the OP might actually be right. Think CQC for space legs. :(

Oh no... thank you for planting another scary thought - you land on a base, open up your panel and select "enter ground arena. You then fade to black and fade back in a set "area" 1/2 a kilometer by 1/2 square. You look on your back and there is a huge blue flag. You're it. You see 5 other people with you.You hear a count down, 3, 2, 1 GO! You have to make it alive to the other side.

I'm scared.

My expectations:
  • All current landable planets and a few more can be explored on foot
  • Getting from your cockpit to the ground is like the SRV - i.e. a canned animation
  • No buildings on the surface can be entered, including bio-domes at the engineer bases
  • No exploring your ship or fleet carrier
  • No exploring a space station
  • Access to the social hubs is via station services (go to bar, go to thargoid incursion, etc)
  • No EVA repairs but possibly EVA to ship relics
I would like to think that is a realistic list based on tempered expectations.

That's kind of the lowest expectations one can have. Pretty pessimistic also, but still better than total hype with assuming things that were never shown.

In one of the early videos DBraben talked about something like that I think - being a stowaway who hides in the cargo hold of someone elses ship.

I believe it might prove difficult to implement, because this someone, if it is another player and not NPC, might just quit the game in the middle of the flight (and not come back to the game for a month). What happens with the player then?

That seems fairly realistic to me as well - I would guess low pressure atmospheric rocky/ice/HMC worlds are the new ones. (Of which there are probably still about as many as there are current landables, of course, but still none of the really interesting ones with widespread life, weather systems, liquid water/ammonia/acid/lava surfaces)

I suspect there will be some internal walking - it's not like sticking together some corridors and rooms is going to be the difficult bit of getting this all to work, right? - and probably that includes some surface sites in a parallel of driving the SRV around "Bob's Silo++ (Low Security)". And they'll probably let you walk around the bridge of your ship at least, why not, they've already got it modelled. You can use the door at the back as an alternative way to get to the exiting-ship animation. I'd guess we'd also get the "enter surface base through door" option - as you can in an SRV now - and it at least puts you back in your ship on one of the landing pads.

It would be awesome if FDev have got that far with it Ian, I'm basing my expectations on the last three years and what FDev have confirmed thus far.
