Less than 5k cmdrs logging in now.

ED/EDO is so bad atm even the gankers have given up on it. Think about that for a bit, while you clank around in your little white suit of armour. ;)
Not true.
On foot there aren't many gankers, but why should there be? It's no consequences if ganked 🤷‍♂️
In Space there are still gankers.
As Inara was mentioned, to clear some misconceptions I can say only that - by my numbers, there is much more than 5,000 commanders currently playing. By "much more" I mean at least tens of thousands of commanders. And that's just numbers from Inara, so in reality there will be even more active commanders. No doom coming. :)
As it was mentioning Inara, I was just pointing out the numbers participating in the CG look terribly small compared to the registered users or the numbers FD mentioned in their
report. Any idea if this is a reporting issue or are there really so few CMDRs taking part?

I didn't read the thread, just replying to OP. Over the past 5 years ED's steam numbers have varied from ~5000 to ~ 12000. This is nothing new and you can look this up on your precious steam DB. Doommongering is a joke if you don't like the game don't play it but it isn't dying

Edit: And there has been an uptick since last 30 days from 5000 to 6000. It's all a cycle

CGs have no appeal to me whatsoever. Feels like self-inflicted grinding (and not in a fun way). I find it hard to imagine I'm not alone! Are there figures for the most people playing these things?

CG participant numbers have always represented only a rather small fraction of the player base, consider 10k participants as high here, some contributing only a single time over an entire week, even in the best of times. I know because I did CGs every week (being an altruist :)) , and for years. Notable exceptions were those where you got some special reward like a double engineered module, free paint jobs, discounts on ships and such, but these were rather rare and usually you did it for the greater good and the rewards were rather neglible in comparison to the effort required. Actually we have seen about the highest numbers early this year and while the average numbers may be lower since Bazmeson Month, I regard them as nothing unusual. I myself more or less stopped doing CGs after I had joined TBAG and found the BGS being a more rewarding alternative of game play, and that may be the same for many veterans like me. As for the numbers, Inara has a history of all CGs since the game's inception.

FWIW, as for Steam charts, I don't appear in them since years even though my original game and Horizons were from there. My Steam game time counter stopped at about 2.2k hours which is only half at best of what Elite says internally. The rest of my play time (since 2017) was spent on the Oculus Store version and since EDO Alpha which I bought from the FD Store, I'm using the standalone launcher altogether.

O7,
🙃

I haven't played in a few weeks..... My reasons?:

1) On foot missions feel laborious when they don't reward much & can easily go wrong.
2) There's no reward I am looking forward to... for a while I was grinding to an Imperial Clipper but tbh mehhh My Anaconda does the same stuff.
3) I'm never going to be able to afford a carrier... mining is boring and involves scanning stuff unsuccessfully for ages. Hanging around a nav point and killing wanted people gets boring. Conflict zones are much the same. In foot combat has gotten boring even though my FPS increased a bit. Community goals seem to be the same (bring stuff / shoot stuff). Exploring so I can scan 2-3 things gets boring and repetitive. I don't like teaming up with other players (i have no IRL friends who play ED).

I'm just waiting for an interesting update or a sci fi itch to get me back into it.

I'm currently hooked on the WW2 Military Sim / FPS online shooter 'hell let loose', really great game but hard as

The numbers of CG participants are genuine (it corresponds to the game and records in the journals). But, lower numbers aren't unusual - some CGs are attracting more players than others and even these with large numbers of participants are just a fraction of the active players. There were even goals with something like 200-300 participants across the years, so it's not very indicative of the active player base. :)

I'm not arguing semantics.
The fact is their isn't alot of cmdrs playing elite anymore.
Because.... well we all know why.
And yes steam figures are an accurate reflection of logins. Perhaps not all. But most I would argue.
Steam figures are excellent at identifying tends, not absolute numbers. Steam players are just a sample like any other from which statistical generalizations can be made. Anyone who argues against you by saying or implying Steam stats are somehow bad is just trolling you.

Just begs the question. Are they going to continue development of elite.?
Odyssey has cost em dear it seems.
The rebalance needs doing last year.
Exploits fixed
Networking fixed
Multicrew fixed
Piracy fixed
Smuggling fixed
Goid synths fixed
High profit gameplay loops closed.
I'm not a doom n gloomer. On the contrary.
I just want reassurance I'm not flogging a dead horse
Also, who cares if there are fewer people in game now? The way fdev carves up the player base, in combination with the game's networking, ED is essentially at single player game with some co-op.

Since you essentially just gestured to the entire game and went "bored now", I would highly encourage you to continue enjoying your WW2 mil-sim and not worrying about Elite.

Solo/Group/Modes not fixed. Solo and group are still sharing same galaxy as open and you can switch it as you want what make any clan-wars interaction almost pointless.

There will be no Kickstarter Backers (I'm one) featured on Steam metrics... unless with additional accounts (as I do have but, again via FDevs platform...NOT Steam)... of course there has been a reduction in players but ONLY Fdev have those metrics to hand.... and don't forget those Epic commanders and others that bought discounted clients, surely a proportion of them are still playing...o7

P.S. I'm also an original Mobius private group player and Mobius regularly culls inactive members and membership of just the original Mobius Group is 19,000 - 20,000 concurrent players... just a single 'group' not in your figures and there are several 'regional' Mobius Groups active at this date!!

I have it on Steam, but I can just start the launcher manually and Steam won't register that I'm playing the game.
