Children's Zoo Pack

1675262355968.png

1. African pygmy goat, Capra hircus
This would be the smallest ungulate in-game, at around 25kg for an adult male. They are one of the most commonly-kept animals in captivity, regularly featuring in children's zoos but also in more general African areas (where they could be used to showcase the conflicts between livestock and wildlife). While they can be kept in big herds when being farmed, I think a group size of up to 30 individuals is appropriate for the game. They come in a huge variety of colours, but I would choose variants of the seven colours recognised in the breed standard - caramel with both white and black markings, brown, grey and black agouti, black with white markings and solid black. Also, to add interest and realism for building their enclosures, they should be able to use the climbing frame.
Continent(s) - Africa
Biome(s) - Grassland, Tropical

2. Bar-headed goose, Anser indicus
The most commonly-kept of all exotic geese, these would be the smallest habitat bird currently in the game. They are fairly docile as geese go, tolerating hand feeding and able to live in walkthrough enclosures in zoos. As well as walkthrough enclosures, they are very tolerant of living with other animals - they have been kept with Indian rhino, water buffalo, cranes, camels, tapirs, peafowl and flamingos among Planet Zoo species. While they form huge flocks on migration, they do live in smaller groups in captivity, with 25-30 individuals probably appropriate for the game. They are attractively coloured for a wild goose species, but have little variation between individuals. Another positive is they can be kept in many settings, including ornamental ponds and lakes, fountains, gardens and moats.
Continent(s) - Asia
Biome(s) - Aquatic, Grassland, Temperate, Tropical

3. Black-capped squirrel monkey, Saimiri boliviensis
Some children's zoos, like the newly-opened one in San Diego, keep small active mammals like primates to provide interest to visitors. While marmosets and tamarins are also possible, they are diminutive and also live in small groups - the squirrel monkey is slightly larger and can live in groups with over 100 individuals in, so they are my favoured choice. I would consider 100 individuals an appropriate maximum group size in the game. They are able to be kept in walkthrough enclosures and would have interspecies bonuses with capuchin monkeys and capybara (bonus points of they can climb on or groom the latter species). These would add an active, colourful and commonly-kept South American primate to the game.
Continent(s) - South America
Biome(s) - Tropical

4. European rabbit, Oryctolagus cuniculus
Probably the flagship animal for this pack, the rabbit is a highly familiar and well-known small mammal that would also be the sole habitat species that is listed as Endangered in the wild. Rather than choosing a domestic breed and limiting potential options, I would choose the wild rabbit. While they mainly come in a standard brown colour, there are also black, albino and ginger variants in the wild, which could give the feel of domestic rabbits. This way, they could fit into many different parts of a zoo - as well as petting zoos, they could be displayed in a European wildlife section or in an Australian section to showcase invasive species. They would be able to burrow like prairie dogs and meerkats and can be kept in groups of up to 10 individuals (the size of most wild warrens).
Continent(s) - Africa, Europe
Biome(s) - Grassland

Walkthrough exhibit
Small parrots, consisting of three species from different parts of the world that can all be kept in walkthrough aviaries where visitors can feed them:
1. Rainbow lorikeet (Trichoglossus moluccanus) Oceania - Temperate, Tropical: Least Concern
2. Rose-ringed parakeet (Psittacula krameri) Africa, Asia - Desert, Grassland, Temperate, Tropical: Least Concern
3. Sun conure (Aratinga solstitialis) South America - Grassland, Tropical: Endangered

Foliage
The foliage in this pack have many functions, including plants that are tactile (adding to the 'petting zoo' feel of the pack), would allow the creation of unique features within a zoo or be used to improve the landscaping within a zoo:

Touch-me-not (Mimosa pudica) – North America, South America; Tropical
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – Europe; Grassland
Crimson bottlebrush (Melaleuca citrina) – Oceania; Temperate, Tropical
Giant feather grass (Celtica gigantea) – Africa, Europe; Desert, Grassland
Chinese parasol tree (Firmiana simplex) – Asia; Temperate
Maize (Zea mays) - North America; Grassland: Can be purchased as either a single plant or a dense clump, the latter allowing for the creation of mazes

Scenery
Not really decided on what sort of scenery to include yet, but I think one thing I would love to see are hay bales - they could improve the appearance of back-of-house areas, petting barns and even animal enclosures themselves.

Update 1.13
Animal behaviour: Piggybacking

This update allows baby animals of certain species to ride on the backs of their parents. During this animation, the requirements of the baby (hunger, thirst etc.) do not change, while the adult can continue to feed and drink as normal. The species that get this behaviour are (unless mentioned, all babies ride only on their mother's back):
  • American alligator
  • Black-and-white ruffed lemur
  • Black-capped squirrel monkey
  • Bonobo
  • Bornean orangutan
  • Chinese pangolin
  • Colombian white-faced capuchin
  • Gharial (only rides on the father's back)
  • Giant anteater
  • Japanese macaque
  • Koala
  • Mandrill
  • Red ruffed lemur
  • Ring-tailed lemur
  • Western chimpanzee
  • Western lowland gorilla
I cannot find any indication that proboscis monkeys, siamangs or saltwater crocodiles carry their offspring on their backs, so I am leaving them out for the time being.

Guest behaviour: Petting and feeding walkthrough
A new gate type allows visitors to enter walkthrough habitats with species that can either be stroked or fed. Some animals are only amenable to being stroked, some can only be fed and some can be both stroked and fed. The animals included in this update are:

Stroking only
Capybara
Llama
European rabbit

Feeding only
Bar-headed goose
Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRvsDyzKil0
Rainbow lorikeet
Rose-ringed parakeet
Sun conure

Stroking and feeding
African pygmy goat

As well as the new gate, there is a feed wagon, where visitors can buy a small cup of feed for the walkthrough animals which can be fed. They need to be placed near to the entrance to the petting/feeding walkthrough habitat, or the walkthrough exhibit in the case of the small parrots, as visitors will bin the food if they do not find a place to use it quickly enough.

New facility: Non-walkthrough exhibits
This update simply allows the current walkthrough exhibit to be turned into a non-walkthrough. In this setting, visitors can view through any of the four walls, provided they are within sight-lines of the path. This would allow the bats, butterflies and the small parrots to be kept in a more standard aviary without having crowds of people moving through the display.

Alternative: Viewing dome
This allows the placement of a glass dome which can accommodate up to six visitors at a time within an animal enclosure. After placing the dome, an entry area has to be placed within a set distance of the dome to allow visitors to access it. The dome can also be placed underwater, for viewing animals such as penguins and seals. I am basically imagining something like the example pictured here:

Hrmm… this sounds challenging yet fun

Let’s start with the update:

New Shop: Plush Toys. What kind of zoo doesn’t sell plushies?

New Staff/Facility: Puppet stage. I saw a video of Chester zoo from the 90s which featured a cute puppet show with cute puppets. I also recall the Bronx Zoo having a puppet show back at 2015.

The pack part is a tough one. I don’t know if I can come up with something better than what we have so far. I also want to avoid islands and highlands since everyone talks about that. I might post my pack idea later.

You know, I realized I haven't done mine yet, so here we go:

Woodlands animal pack

Hayo, zookeepers,
I hope you have your walking boots, because we are about to take a trip all over the world's forests and meet an array of animals.
Say hello to the adorable raccoon dog; listen to the growls of the Tasmanian Devil; don't forget to keep away from the Wild Boar and her babies; gab with the gobbling Wild Turkey; don't cuddle with the Crested Porcupine; don't forget your spectacles with the Spectacled Bear; ans race with the European hare. Also, watch your step, as we have 3 vipers arriving: the Eastern Copperhead, the Northern Cottonmouth, and the Mexican Cantil
  1. Raccoon dog
  2. Tasmanian devil
  3. Wild boar
  4. Wild turkey
  5. Crested porcupine
  6. Spectacled bear
  7. European hare
  8. Eastern copperhead (E)
  9. Northern cottonmouth (E)
  10. Mexican cantil (E)
New enrichment
  • Prey dummy - similar to the piñata dummy, the prey dummy is an animal-shaped enrichment object on a spring. Carnivores love to whack it around. Comes in the following designs:
    • Deer
    • Gazelle
Music - calm, kinda orchestral music. Think A Summer Place - Percy Faith or Slow Muzak - Keith Andrew Roberts (aka Merchant's Waltz - Spore OST)
  • Tanuki Tumbles
  • Boar Ballad
  • Bear Essentials
  • Wonderful Woods
Update 1.13

  • Mini Exhibits - exhibits now have another size, 1/4 the size of the standard exhibits. Mini exhibits serve exactly the same function as standard exhibits, but not all animals can be housed in them. The following are excluded:
    • Green iguana
    • Lesser Antillean iguana
  • Non-Walkthrough Exhibits Toggle Option - Walkthrough exhibits now have a toggle that deactivates the ability for guests to go inside and the path to be taken out
  • Alternate Exhibit Interiors - now you have the option to choose what biome the exhibit interior will be, depending on the species.
  • New Animal Behavior - animals will now interact with each other, such as roaring and barking. Following affected are:
    • Amur leopard
    • Bengal tiger
    • Cougar
    • Jaguar
    • Siberian tiger
    • Snow leopard
    • West African lion
    • African wild dog
    • Arctic wolf
    • Dhole
    • Dingo
    • Timber wolf

Okay, here’s my ideas:

Planet Zoo: Rainforests Animal Pack🦥
April 2023
Hayo Zookeepers,
Get ready to adventure and explore the deepest jungles with the Planet Zoo: Rainforests Animal Pack which will launch alongside Update 1.13.
What’s that rustling in the vegetation? It’s a whole bunch of animals who call the world’s rainforests their home!
Give a wave to the slow, steady Linnaeus’ Two Toed Sloth as it holds to its tree branch; the energetic and bright Red River Hog; the odd and endangered Goodfellow’s Tree Kangaroo; the sociable South American Coati; the colourful crested Victoria Crowned Pigeon; the long-leaping Mantled Guereza; and the Black and Gold Howler with its booming calls.
And the rainforest wouldn’t be as colourful a place without birds! Meet the Scarlet Macaw, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Military Macaw, Hyacinth Macaw and Spix’s Macaw, five wonderful birds who are sure to brighten up your Walkthrough Exhibits!
We hope you enjoyed this announcement, and we look forward to seeing you over on our social channels! Let us know what your favourite bit was below. Hang tight, Zookeepers!🦥

Planet Zoo: Update 1.13
  • Playgrounds. Young guests can now ‘go wild’ in play zones (implemented in a similar way to the interactive education stations). Includes interactive pieces such as slides, swing sets, climbing frames, monkey bars and more.
  • Animal parenting behaviours. Mother animals and their babies will spend much more time together, instead of being separate most of the time. Young animals will want to be by mum all the time. This is true particularly for your new sloths, which will cling to their mother until they mature.
  • New exhibit options. With four different exhibit sizes, you can now appropriately house any exhibit species from the tiniest insects to the largest snakes and iguanas. Boxes now are 1x1, 2x2, 4x4 and 8x8.
  • Woodchip floor pieces, implemented the same as the in-game mulch pieces. These can be used to decorate flowerbeds, habitats and even your new playgrounds!
Omg I love this pack so much!!!! Can I preorder??

Alright, let's give this a go...

Coastal Pack

1. Walrus
(Odobenus rosmarus) - The headliner of the pack, this iconic marine mammal may not be the most common in zoos but it is nonetheless extremely recognisable to the general public and would mean all three families of pinnipeds are now represented in-game. In this pack it also serves as the representative of polar and subpolar coastlines.

shutterstock_1229807503-scaled.jpg

2. Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris) - Usually agreed upon as the most unique choice for a third otter species, this would be an extremely marketable animal that could just as easily serve as the pack's headliner. Occurring right across the coasts of the North Pacific, at least historically, their intrinsic ties to kelp forests means they help represent one of the world's most recognisable coastal ecosystems.

1899.jpg

3. Australian Pelican (Pelecanus conspicillatus) - A coastal pack wouldn't be complete without one of these stately birds. Any species would be great, but I've chosen the Australian here for several reasons; they have the largest and most exaggerated beak of all the pelicans, occur on the other side of the world from the otter and therefore add representation to the temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere (although it also occurs in the tropics), and because I'm just personally biased towards them.

australian_pelicans.f03ba4a.width-800.a91c827.jpg

4. Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia mydas) - The most iconic and recognisable of all marine reptiles, this would be the most aquatic animal in the game so far but still one that would work with current mechanics. This extremely widespread species occurs on the shores of every continent excluding Antarctica and adds a decidedly tropical/subtropical animal to the pack's habitat roster.

463728091-56a5f6dd3df78cf7728abd08.jpg

5. Caribbean Hermit Crab (Coenobita clypeatus) - What better exhibit animal for a coastal-themed pack than Planet Zoo's first crustacean? Hermit crabs are widely considered to be cute and endearing animals by the public, with this species being among the most common in captivity (largely due to its popularity as a pet).

Scenery - Coastal Theme
This scenery set largely focuses on a rustic seaside village aesthetic, with pieces including:
  • A flexicolour horizontal wooden plank wall set
  • Rope and netting pieces
  • New set of wooden beams, because we can never have enough of them
  • Painted wooden statues of each creature with both fresh and weathered variants
  • New decals centred specifically on wood
  • Props for items such as surf boards, dinghies, oars, buoys etc
  • Some new faux rocks
Soundtrack
  • Nautical Dreams - A slow peaceful track that captures that sleepy seaside town feel
  • Southern Surf - A bit of a surfy track that sounds somewhat like the Aquatic Pack trailer music
  • Antillean Paradise - This track leans heavily into stereotypical tropical island music, steel drums and all
  • By the Sea - Main theme of the pack
Update 1.13
  • Animal Fixes:
    • The male California Sea Lion has been resized to accurately reflect the species' pronounced sexual dimorphism
    • The jumping of the Clouded Leopard has been tweaked and now appears less floaty and more realistic
  • Exhibit update - Introducing Invertebrate Exhibits! These small 1m x 1m x 1m boxes will now house all of your invertebrate species, including the newly introduced Caribbean Hermit Crab! No longer will your guests struggle to find your smaller critters in their giant terrariums.
  • New Animal/Guest Behaviour - Some of your aquatic animals are now capable of creating large splashes in the water, with the guests reacting accordingly! This behaviour has currently been added to the following animals:
    • American Alligator
    • California Sea Lion
    • Gharial
    • Giant Otter
    • Grey Seal
    • North American Beaver
    • Saltwater Crocodile
    • Sea Otter
    • Walrus
  • New Shop - Fish and Chips, a classic seaside food in the UK and some other parts of the English-speaking world.
  • New Colourmorphs - The Dingo has received a much needed face lift with a range of new colourmorphs that more accurately reflect their colour variation in the wild. These include:
    • Black-and-tan
    • Sable
    • Cream
    • Brindle
    • Piebald
  • New Ride - In a similar vein to the classic Riverboat Ride, a Coastal Boat Ride has been added to Planet Zoo as part of free update 1.13! This ride functions much the same way but features a boat with a much more modern design.

Sure, go ahead
Yay!

Since Farmlands was my Scenery pack, I'm going to go with one of the more obvious themes for an animal pack, the Rainforest. It may seem all talked out about already, but I think it will make sense when I talk about the 1.13 update I have in mind.

Rainforest Animal Pack:
Brown Throated Three-Toed Sloth
Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
Lar Gibbon
Brazilian Porcupine
Squirrel Monkey
Red River Hog
Shoebill Stork
Walkthrough Exhibit: Macaws (Scarlet, Hyacinth, Blue and Yellow, Military Green)

While the pack itself is pretty standard and really just adding animals and signs, update 1.13 can branch out into other possibilities.

Update 1.13
While the pack is rooted in animal additions, the focus of this update is expanding upon arboreal behaviors and species. Additional climbing sets and expanded climbing behaviors, as well as arboreal feeding stations and additional arboreal enrichment items. New animations including animal interplay with other animals while in trees, sleeping behaviors and eating behaviors that occur in trees (like what we have with just the Koala right now), as well as additional general climbing and swinging animations.

All of the habitat animals in the Rainforest Pack except for the Red River Hog and Shoebill Stork will be coming with these new animations and arboreal behaviors, and there's quite a few updated animals as well. Noting that not all animals listed will receive every single new animation, but they will all get a few at very least.
Siamang
Red Panda
Capuchian Monkey
Western Chimpanzee
Western Lowland Gorilla
Koala
Bornean Orangutan
Binturong

(inside joke: update 1.13 will also fix the clouded leopards from ever escaping..if only!)

But that's not all. Update 1.13 will add a new guest feature as well, Viewing Platforms, of which Treetop Platforms will be one of the types, as well as standard overhangs and the much requested glass pathing. These features will allow your guests to get up close and personal to the stars of the zoo, but just in case the animals are hard to find, guests now can have binocular stands placed on paths that will give them more visual acuity than they would have with the naked eye. Who knows, this might even reduce some of the complaints about not being able to see the animals (but probably not).

Islands Animal Pack:
  • Fossa
  • Japanese Raccoon Dog
  • Matschie's Tree-Kangaroo
  • Tasmanian Devil
  • American Flamingo
  • Walrus
  • Little Blue Penguin

Update:
  • One-way curbs.
  • Deep swimming for monitor lizards.
Is it too late to tack this one on? The considerbly unlikely:
  • Egg laying: birds, reptiles and monotremes now make nests and lay eggs.
  • Laboratories: want all your new eggs to hatch all nice and healthy? Have your scientists gather them up and bring them to the new Laboratory building to incubate until they hatch.
