News Let's talk about Gnosis and the Cone Sector

I don't know FD. Maybe just stop trying be the game master for 11k++ players. Don't do these community events, at least not until you have the tools to handle it and the writers to come up with interesting content. It somehow always ends up being disappointing and a waste of time. I am so happy I ignored this completely, but man, this must suck for those that put effort into it.

My most optimistic beyond optimistic hope for this event was that the Gnosis would jump into the Cone Sector, we'd find active (and not just old, abandoned) Thargoid bases and find a way to interact with the Thargoids as a species in a friendly way. Could have been the beginning of a brand new thing.

But alas, it was not to be. Stuck behind a massive tease and a "we never intended to let you in lololololol"

With this growing uncertainty, the Pilots’ Federation reported that the jump to the Cone Sector was not safe, not advised and urged Commanders to steer clear of any journeys there, permit-locking the systems.
Despite these warnings, Canonn would still make the jump into the unknown.

Does anyone know when and where this warning was given? I can't find it. The whole thing (to my tired eyes) was pushed by Elite and Canonn as gung ho everybody aboard, don't miss your chance, only 4 weeks to go, don't get left behind hype.

Not that it would have stopped me, or probably others either, even if I did see the safety sign, but still would like to see evidence of the "Don't go there!" documents. On my desk by tomorrow morning .

I was on my way to Sag A for the first time when I read about the event, was extremely excited and spent the next 5-6 days jumping back only to be disappointed by a event that was half by FDEV and poorly communicated by the community management team and the designers.

To be honest I'm done with the game now, this is proof that this company doesn't give a about players time at all. Not spending another dollar on this game and to be honest, going to make sure that any friend who brings it up knows about how horribly done this was before they waste their money on buying it.

I think frustration is less about Thargoids attacking the Gnosis and much more about not actually departing on the announched expedition to the Cone Sector.

I came equipped for thargoids and have had a few hours of fun trying to scan them down without getting blown out of the skies... Now Ill probably depart the Gnosis before too long, because the actual four week expedition I was looking forward to is not going to happen. I had surely expected Thargoid interference in the Cone Sector... I had not expected to see the whole exploration element snuffed out before it started...

Exactly my point of view.
I am no fighter, I am not interested in fighting (players/thargoids alike) but I expected some thargoid attacks during an exploration event

What I was interested in was to get help from the Gnosis to visit a place I was not able to go to by my own due to jump ranges of conventional ships.
Even if the Gnosis' mission will continue toward the final goal in four weeks, I am no longer interested. I can go to the Formidine Rift by myself, no need for a megaship.

For now I will leave my ship docked in the Gnosis. I didn't play much lately anyway (even exploration gets boring after some time with not much new things to explore...).

I still love ED because of the beauty of the (simulated) galaxy and still have big hopes for Q4 (although some planned things got postponed, again, to later in 2019...)

FDevs, in all honesty, are you really 100, working full time to expand ED? I have my doubts, seeing how fast (hum... Slow?) things are implemented?

Greetings Commanders,

As you and others may have noticed in the early hours of the morning, a GalNet article on our community site revealed the future fate of the Gnosis’ jump toward the Cone Sector . However, the intended jump was to take place at the normal time of the server tick, however this was not the case and has caused a disparity between the news Commanders were able to read and the actions that took place in game.

We are aware that this has caused a number of Commanders to express their discontent that the news that was announced and the fate of the Gnosis’ epic charter.

After seeing this morning’s feedback, we want to take the opportunity to explain a little more about the event as a whole, and how these actions are playing out right now in the game world, the galaxy.

Before the launch…

Canonn high command reached out to us to plan the next jumps for the Gnosis. The destination? The Cone Sector... Cone Sector FN-J B9-0, to be precise.

Without revealing too much about this area of space, the Cone Sector both in content and in game lore was always meant to be locked off; and the fact that certain systems within the sector weren’t permit-locked was an oversight from a time before it was possible for Megaships to make such jumps, like the Gnosis.

Based on feedback we've received in the past, and in an aim to involve player agency in Elite Dangerous’ narrative, rather than simply making a universal change, or flicking a switch to ‘permit lock’ the systems in question (known in some corners of the community as “God modding”), we decided to incorporate the actions of a great Elite Dangerous player group, and a huge number of Commanders, into the wider lore of the game. Supporting the event as best we could with our own channels while reacting to an emergent piece of content from the community.

Working with Canonns’ event in mind, we decided to weave the event into the large game narrative, and the arrival of a threatening new Thargoid variant – the terrifying Hydra that some commanders woefully encountered recently.

So, what’s happened so far?

The Canonn called for Commanders to join them on the expedition to the Cone Sector to make history in the name of both exploration and science!

Meanwhile, across other areas of the galaxy, some Commanders reported sightings of what they believed to be a new Thargoid variant, later confirmed and classified by AEGIS and the Pilot’s Federation as the Hydra.

With this growing uncertainty, the Pilots’ Federation reported that the jump to the Cone Sector was not safe, not advised and urged Commanders to steer clear of any journeys there, permit-locking the systems.
Despite these warnings, Canonn would still make the jump into the unknown. And, with them, approximately 11,000 Commanders, from all walks of life, allegiances and states, pledged to this legendary expedition. Whether driven by a pursuit of knowledge, fearlessness or even perhaps… madness, they pledged their ship and soul to the future of the Gnosis.

This morning

As the GalNet article explained, moments into its ground-breaking jump toward the Cone Sector FN-J B9-0 system, the Gnosis has been left stranded following a massive Thargoid attack in the Outotz ST-I d9-6 system.

Now, we are aware that the premature release of the GalNet article (‘Gnosis Stranded’) caused speculation and concern from the community. It spoke of events that had not yet had any consequence or implication in-game, and as this occurred in the early hours of the morning, had no explanation from the team. We have investigated why that article went live at the wrong time and corrected the community site’s GalNet news feed so that it won’t break embargo in the future.

We are also aware that there are a few issues causing problems for Commanders at the current location of the Gnosis. The team are actively investigating and correcting those issues. Some of those issues are already fixed, while others are being addressed and a fix is in progress currently. Please visit the following thread for the current status update on these issues.

We would like to thank all of the Commanders who have provided their feedback – and pledged to aid the Gnosis in its defence against the alien threat and the terrifying new Thargoid variant. We would also like to take this opportunity to apologise for the confusion and bugs within this event but we are hugely grateful to the many thousands of Commanders who came together to make the event possible and become a part of history.

For those Commanders who have found themselves detained further away, please contact our support team who will be happy to move you back to the Gnosis, should you wish to be…

A minority is interested in the story you (fdev) write.

Give freedom for the players to create the story.

Will be much more interesting than the history written by fdev.

They could have chosen any system inside the sector for the Gnosis to end up in even if the asssets were - for whatever reason - in place already. Let the Gnosis be stranded for a couple of days, with players having to fight back Thargoids as the Gnosis is being repaired, let people explore one single system (maybe seed one or two Thargoid bases). Everybody gets back to the ship, Gnosis jumps back.
Why to bother? Mysterious UA interference - jump malfunction - no jump or jump to known system. Done.

It's easy and obvious enough solution. So... I still think they are doing thargoid's experiments on players with their forced narration insertion.

It could have also crashed the game or the server having players enter a system with unfinished assets.
I don't really see how that would have been possible if the assets (whatever they are) were already live, but again they could have chosen any system to drop out to in the constellation due to the hyperdiction. I honestly doubt that they have been (or would be) pushing out game-breaking assets to all systems in the constellation in the live version of the game.

Jesus, are you naive! :p

Sorry, FDev, but this is not acceptable. I have never seen a developer screw up a community event this bad in any other game. Ever. The fact that the ship only jumped 12 lightyears doesn't bother me at all, but the execution was an absolute joke. It's obvious that you did zero testing before making the event public. If even a single developer had teleported to the Gnosis and tried to undock and kill the Thargoids after it was moved to its current location, they would've noticed that the entire scenario was utterly and completely broken.

I spent a week grinding materials and engineering a brand new 600M+ credit Vette specifically for this event, only to get screwed over because you can't do your job right. You're supposed to be professional software developers and game designers. Act like it.

I think the individual or group responsible for the technical side of this event should release a direct apology where they acknowledge the fact that they really messed up and promise to do better in the future.

If the developers had done the following then no one could really criticise them

1. Zero official mentions or Galnet articles about the jump
2. Allow the jump to happen as planned to cone sector
3. Cone sector has no new content/thargoids only unexplored systems
4. Everyone gets bored and waits for the next gnosis jump or suicides home

The salt is due to the hype that FD generated themselves

No. The salt is generated by player expectations that they would jump their when there was no proof that they actually would. Sorry guys, while I except FDev are guilty on a number of things, this is all on the players. If you ignore what has been going on and what was said, that is all on you.

Oh, gawd... A converted sectarian of Far God is already among us!

Last paragraph of this GalNet article hints towards the threat: https://community.elitedangerous.com/en/galnet/uid/5b86af3f5efed618853e99c3

Yeah, but you don't know what KIND of future content. There is almost certainly nothing currently there - the assets intended for the area could just be on pieces of paper right now.

I'm not sure that they know. These permit regions have been locked since day one as placeholders. Michael may have known what they were planning some time in the distant future four years ago but I'm not sure that the corporate memory goes back that far any more.

As potential Game Master I would create "hyperspace annomaly" that gnossis would be thrown away at least 10000 ly from cone sector :D

I'm afraid that you're slightly off the mark here due to the degree that Frontier, via their streams and newsletters, hyped the event as a journey into the unknown. The GalNet news articles were weak and easily dismissed and possibly not even read. The out of game hype machine was running full throttle.
