Lets talk about the Frontier Workshop

So the Frontier Workshop is a downgrade compared to the Steam Workshop in every way.

  • Only 8 items per page, this should be 32 at least
  • You can see what page you are on, but you don't see how many pages there are in total.
  • Only 1 screenshot per item. On Steam workshop you could upload multiple screenshots or even videos.
  • Sorting and searching works somehow even worse than the Steam workshop.

I understand Frontier wants to use their own workshop so they can enable cross-platform, but the workshop is such a limited and downgraded mess....

I dont even enjoy using it, let alone uploading files to it.

Are these things gonna be addressed soon or is it gonna stay like this?

Here is how it looks now:

You know... just very basic stuff Steam Workshop has had for 2 decades. Please do not limit us.

Bear in mind that Steam was designed for such things. Although the Frontier Workshop has been available for a while on console, it's new to PC and so is cross platform. Also think of the big-data aspect. It is not an easy task to store this amount of data successfully. I think maybe it's baby steps and get it right and it will expand in future.

Well they should have thought about that earlier or also kept Steam workshop then.

Alright so here is my first impression about 1 hour of gameplay. I'm gonna play another hour later so I stay under the 120 minute limit.

- Performance
The performance seems slightly worse than the first game. I would expected it to improve due to better technology (utilize all CPU cores and so on)

- Graphics
I'm not a big fan of the graphics. Everything looks either blurry or weird somehow. Even with Depth Of Field turned off.

- Workshop
I'm not a big fan of the Frontier Workshop. I hope us PC gamers will get the Steam Workshop soon.

- Path system
I'm gonna be contrarian here and do not agree that the path system is an improvement. Building straight is almost impossible especially down the line when you edit stuff. I don't know why it works so fiddly but angle snap often times does not work when editing paths. I'm very OCD when building and I want things to be 100% straight and snappy. So i'm not a big fan of this sytem and would like to see classic options to build straight, grid based paths along with the new path tools. When editing a path I want to see the length of the path in a tooltip. I want it to actually snap not be free form impossible to make straight. And queues can only be very big. We cannot make sharp 90 degrees angles. The path system had potential, but im not happy with it and prefer the path system from the first game. Deleting paths also is horrible. I want to right click or press delete button but I gotta select bulldozer tool first. It just doesnt work well.

Also why cant we change texture of staff paths?
How do we remove the curb?

- UI
Like everybody I am so incredibly disturbed by the horrible UI. WHY IS THERE A HUGE HEATMAPS BUTTON ON TOP OF THE SCREEN? Who asked for this? Who needs this there? It is so horrible, like yuck, it's making me sick. Please remove that ASAP.

- Menu
Also step backwards. Why can't I open multiple menus at once? Why does it always default to blueprints when I want to build custom stuff? Menu's keep getting into the way too, I just keep on hitting ESC to find out where I am.

- Zoom out
Can't zoom out far enough. For some reason I cannot zoom out far enough like in the first game. Maybe they did this to make the map appear bigger, but it is a step backwards for me and I cannot see clearly this way. Edge scrolling can be fixed by editing an xml file luckely but why do we have to do this for you?

- Interface
The text and buttons are way too big, even when putting the scale to the lowest possible option of 70%. I would like to see 50% or maybe even lower since I use a big 4k screen.

- Building
Building works horrible compared to the first game too. I would rather see a building tab next to the scenery tab again. I keep looking for pieces and it just works so slow and annoying and fiddly compared to the first game.

- Scenery objects
Scenery objects load in very slow. There is a clear delay of a second when looking for certain pieces it is really annoying

- Terrain textures
No asphalt paint? I wanna make a road that is inaccessible for guests. In planco1 we used to be able to paint asphalt, why cant we now?

- Guests
Sometimes the guests teleport around on the path or are walking on the water in the pools as if they are Jesus. Guests also constantly get stuck on paths.

- Part entrances
The busses are nice, but unrealistic. We can't have thousands of guests coming from 3 busses. Where are the tunnels like in the first game?

- Animations
The animations also seem bumpy and jiggly. Also a step backwards.

I dont know I really want to like this game but it's such an obvious console port I feel the same negative feelings like I had with Cities Skylines 2

Well they should have thought about that earlier or also kept Steam workshop then.
Hmmm. I just said thanks for a good point but now I want to argue. Have you got any idea what it take to put that Workshop together? Even say from the simple point of how much storage space and hardware costs are required? Maybe you should go play Mario Kart.

Mods, I won't argue. I'm not listening any more 😂

A comment section would be nice. I subscribed to an entrance blueprint but it was with maybe 50 trees that shouldn't be in that blueprint. There's no way to give that player some feedback so he/she can improve the blueprint.

Yes OMG it is awful. I would prefer to use the Steam WS even if it meant my stuff was only available to PC players. Not having a comments section is awful and all the things said in the first post I agree with. This is a terrible experience as a builder and that is literally the whole reason I play Planet Coaster at all is to make and share stuff.

Also having to redo all my descriptions the other day because they got nuked for some unknown reason was not fun.

I agree, if you don't have the Workshop fully ready to be used, then you shouldn't have made it the only option.

Storage space or hardware costs aren't my problem - they are Frontiers. THEY made the choice to go this way, WE didn't. This should have been fully fleshed out BEFORE the game came out and not expect us to to wait around until they get it figured out. I didn't pay for 'baby steps' - I paid for a professionally done game like the ones that preceded it.

I KNOW Frontier can do it...they've done it before. I'm just puzzled why they didn't this time...

Yes same, I love being a designer on the steam workshop, make updates, communicate with people in comment section.

But the simple fact we can only have 1 screenshot it's just absurd. How can you show a park in one screenshot? Or something else... I mean I understand they need some sort of limit, maybe 5 or 10 screenshots max.

So many things not great with the frontier workshop and it hasn't been for years and is nothing new this has been issues since it was first used with PC1 on console and later with planet zoo on console, contstantly having to go through all your pages of subscribed blue prints to check for updates and click them 1 by 1 is the biggest annoyance, lets not forget that in a couple months you might have a couple hundred pages to click through a couple times a day, took me over 2 hours yesterday just updating subscribed blueprints.

Now people might thing why not sort by last updated, well that is another thing when you update your made blueprint it doesn't change the last updated date so when people sort on last updated they do not get to see what was updated recently from their subscribed blieprints so that doesnt help either.

What they need to do is give us the following options.

1. Update all Subscribed Blueprints that require an update click, or make this automaticly happen at game start.
2. A tab that only shows what has an update availeble
3. An option to show more blueprints on screen.
4. The option to interact with subscribers, like the comment section on steam.

And some screenshots are bad so you don't know what you can expect with a (larger) blueprint.

Another problem, right now the servers where down and so you have no access to any of your subscribed blueprints or parks. They need to make them available offline We need a genius to step up and make a converter that turns all these meta files into blueprint files so our subbed blueprints are always available even offline.

We did some research with a bunch of creators today, from the looks of it the frontier workshop also randomly marks blueprints as that they require you to update while the creator that made them didn't even update them so something is serieusly wrong why is the frontier workshop punishing the players by turning this into an hourly task ?? Frontier needs to fix these things. Right now people are already starting to share blueprints through other means. Whoever is going to create a website where people can upload their blueprints is going to make serieus cash because many people are already done and done with the frontier workshop.

if only we had the option to use both the steam WS and frontier WS that means pc players keep the format that works for them and the console players get blueprints too i mean its great that console players get a "workshop" but i hate that pc players who enjoy and use the steam workshop have had that option removed in favour of console players.... surely it should be more tools not restrictions/ rules... and what about when the frontier workshop is no longer supported will there be a move or merge to the steam workshop?
