Let's talk about the other 3D

I've been playing Elite: Dangerous in anaglyph mode and it's amazing! The only problem I've noticed is that there is some bleeding through in the red lens and it creates a blur effect. I've done some research on this and what that has revealed is that FD knows about it and recognizes that it's a bug. Has there been any movement on this? Because playing in anaglyph mode is a cheaper, preferable alternative to HMD. And what about support for passive 3D for those who have 3D monitors? Any plans to integrate this?

Anyone else play in anaglyph mode?

The game already supports passive 3d monitors in side by side mode, in can use it this way on mine and it works flawlessly, if not for the halved resolution (half the lines go for each eye). Never tried anaglyph, but I supposed the lost colours can be even more off-putting than the lost resolution...

And then there's VR [money]....

Elite 3D anaglyph mode is pretty good. Just need red / blue glasses, I used glasses that came with a kids comic. They are made of paper card and too small, but good enough!

Yeah, the colors are off, but it gets this surrealist look. I think I have the wrong glasses, though. I'mean using red and blue, but I read that ED renders in red and cyan. I have a pair arriving tomorrow. I also found on the steam forms that you can use nvidia 3d view, but you have to go through a few hoops to get it working. It would be nice to have ED support nVidia 3d view without the hoops.

So is anaglyph in ED give the same feeling as when you used to go to the cinema and wear the 3d glasses?

With the stuff jumping out of the screen at you?

Is it worth getting a pair of cheap 3d glasses for?

I have to say I'm rather surprised that in late 2016 anyone would be interested in anaglyph 3D in any video game. I don't think I've seen anything in red/blue 3D in years and I'm only in my early 40s. I'd have to think it ruins a large part of the game, and that is how pretty the galaxy is when viewed through my ship.

Don't misunderstand, I'm not passing judgement on how anyone plays Elite - I think that's part of the brilliance of Elite, everyone can play how they want and enjoy it. I'm just surprised that's all and hell I'm even surprised some play it in SBS 3D although I'm now curious to set that up in my Rift just so I can see what it looks like. While VR isn't that expensive at the same time I understand that it's still out of reach for some so if you happened to have a 3D TV already and you enjoy SBS 3D then that's awesome.

Mainly commenting so I can subscribe to the thread....

I got a pair of pink/cyan anaglyph glasses on the back of a cereal box with some with some online content for the children and "borrowed" them to play ED for a couple of months...
Earlier Red/green glasses had I tried left after images.

I then bought a Track IR and the experience was brilliant... I was really surprised at how good it was.

The rendition of colour using pink/cyan is actually quite good after a few minutes... your brain actually seems to filter out the filters... if you see what I mean... It's much better than those old red/free movie glasses... it's funny when you take them off after an extended session, though.

I played an elite dangerous training mission (docking) on an active 120Hz monitor in a shop here in Akihabara. That was Of course another step up, but still, in support of anaglyph, it can -at the very least- give you a flavour for 3D

VR is ridiculously expensive! Not only do you have to have the HMD which ranges from $600 to $800, but you also have to have a high enough video card and PC. My nVidia 970 marginally meets the criteria, but my PC fails compatibility (yeah, it's an older PC). A 1070 is what most would buy for VR, which runs around $400, and a decent PC would run me about $800. That's about an $1800 investment for VR.

The cheaper version, which I'm currently using, are a pair of 3D glasses costing $5. $1800 vs $5 for 3D/VR... I'll deal with the off pudding color and stick with anaglyph for now.

I have been doing some research into nVidia 3D vision, however. A monitor with an IR emitter and glasses would run me about $300. And this solution has no off pudding color. For me, this is a better option. I get a 3D window with full color and resolution.

Don't get me wrong, a HMD would be absolutely awesome, but the price is prohibitive and I'm concerned about nausea. I play for great spans of time and I don't get nauseous using anaglyph mode.

Get a proper pair of anaglyph glasses For between $5 and 15 from amazon. They're more comfortable and come with two or different blue/cyan shades of lens for optimising the experience.

Thanks to the OP for suggesting something I never would have tried on my own. Rep++ I just played ED in 3D using an old pair of anaglyph cardboard glasses. While I wouldn't say that it was a "great" experience, it was a lot better than I expected.

I played for over an hour, driving around the ancient alien ruins in my SRV. After a while, the 3D effect was pretty good, but the colors were still funky. The downside is that I now have a headache. I think I will get a better pair of anaglyph glasses and use them occasionally.

Yeah, with better glasses you shouldn't have a headache. I've been playing for hours and still no headache. And my brain has actually adapted and the colors have gotten better! lol

I want to try nVidia's 3D vision next, but FD doesn't directly support it. You have to jump through some hoops. I found this link that guides you through getting Elite: Dangerous to work with 3D vision.

Samarco, can you look into making Elite: Dangerous compatible with nVidia's 3D vision? It's an awesome alternative to HMD's.

Before getting my DK2 about a year ago, I did use the nvidia plastic red/blue glasses to play various games and the 3d effect is generally quite good! Its just limited to the size of the monitor and the colours look radical, but for comfort they were great. I really hope that after 3 or 4 generations of VR they can come up with something as lightweight and compact as them.

Just look at the difference 15 years made to products like smart phones. Admitedly progress will be slower as VR is a lot more niche than mobile telecommunications but I like to think VR is going to be quite sharp and affordable by the time im retiring! You got 30 odd years people, now make us all proud.

I sometimes use the side-by-side on a 3D TV with passive glasses. This also has the bleed-over issue. That being said when inside a station or on a planet where there is lots of scenery, this is not noticeable and gives a reasonable 3D experience.
Also tried the 'Rift' at a show and while great, I'm going to wait for a higher resolution version to be available before going down that route.

I have an AMD Radeon R9 270x with a LG 3D TV, and works perfect side by side with passive glasses. Only lose resolution (not colors), but the LG TV manage a good antialiasing and the TEXT is legible.

Cam you provide a link to the best glasses to buy for ED.

I have some cheap eBay ones on order but I'm thinking they won't be very good.

Does anyone else feel like the star background looks like it's a paper screen right outside the cockpit? And the planets seem to be lacking depth. I've never been to space so I don't know what it actually looks like, but when I look up at the sky it feels far away, not projected on a screen in front of me. Does it also look like this in HMD's?
