LFT 509 and Witch's Reach - A call to identify the factions that issue the permits to these two systems (if any such faction exists)

I keep wondering, with the recently increased effort to find Unknown Artefacts in mind: why would FD add valuable salvage convoy beacons to LFT 509 and Witch's Reach as part of the 1.2 release if we're not meant to be able to get there in 1.2???
Probably, players can force minor factions in neighbouring systems to expand to 509 and Witch's Reach. However you can't control destination of expansion, so it will requie some effort and time.

A lot of these reasons not to look are based on the assumption that the system map is showing all the information. It could simply be incomplete which makes more sense to me. Keep looking

That's a great idea. Very strange though because to keep the factions out they just don't give them an entry permit.

Me too. I might go back toward LFT 509 and have a looks

Yes, I've seen plenty of system maps that clearly have a population and stations, but the system map doesn't show any information about the factions at all while others do (thus you have to travel to the system to get an idea of what faction percentages are). I think this may be a bug more than anything else.

This is in the 1.3.07 patch notes:

Increased radius of the sphere of systems used to generate missions from 10ly to 15ly, allowing all permit systems to be within range of at least one system that can give the permit

Could this affect LFT 509 and Witch's Reach?

I saw that too and continued my search.

Ben, if I'd seen your post I would have skipped Kaupolock and Hrimfaxi!

I checked out Kaupolock, Hrimfaxi and 9 Puppis tonight.
None of the factions seem to have anything to do with LFT 509 at all. I'm already Allied with Federation so that helps speed things along. I took donation and delivery missions in each system to boost my personal rating with them, but it didn't make any difference.

One thing I did try was to buy trade data for every system I could around LFT 509.
The unsurprising outcome was there was a network of curves and lines all over the place, EXCEPT to or from LFT 509.
NO system within 20ly trades with LFT 509. It's like the Billy-no-mates of systems, everyone else plays together but they don't play with LFT 509.

I did notice something else about LFT 509 that I've not seen mentioned before...
From the system map view available for the system, the main star is indeed LFT 509 A.
The secondary star is Ross 54. The planets orbiting it are still identified at LFT 509 B 1, 2 etc.

The galaxy map screen gives an alternate identification for the system as Gliese 263.
Doing a search on that gave me this page which gives another identifier, HIP 34104
Plugging HIP 34104 into Simbad gave me this page which confirms LFT 509 = Gliese 263 = HIP 34104 = Ross 54

So what's special about this system?
It appears on a list of x-ray sources and extreme UV emitting stars...

It has a very high "proper motion" or parallax through the galaxy relative to Sol...

Apart from that, I can't see anything that makes this particular system stand out compared to any other.

Thanks Mr Zenith,

Each day I learn more about the stars :)

Another update. Lets see how the search goes.
