Hey guys,
Does anyone know of a particular light that is perhaps blocked by scenery in order to create a sort of "sun rays through the trees" type of look? And if not, how would you recreate that with lights or whatever?
For lighting info in general, see Grrt's tutorial in the sticky at the top of this forum.
But as to your specific question, I'm afraid you can't do what you want. Light in PC does not work at all like real light . There are 3 rather different types of lights that work like this: :
* Sunlight and moonlight (aka ambient light) penetrates all game objects and up to about 10m of terrain. HOWEVER, despite this penetration, it still somehow causes both game objects and terrain to cast shadows. These shadows make the insides of buildings slightly darker than ambient conditions outside, but nowhere near total darkness.
* Some game objects (found on both the building and scenery light tabs) actually cast light that extends some distance from the source object. This light penetrates all game objects and up to about 10m of terrain same as ambient light, but does NOT does cast shadows. This is why what you want is impossible. This type of light is very good for eliminating shadows caused by ambient light, but can't create any of its own.
* Some game objects "glow" at the source object but do not emit light over a distance. This type of light includes "lit" signs, fairy ights, and most sci-fi lights, etc. This type of light doesn't penetrate anything or cast any shadows, it just makes the source of the light visible in the dark from the other side of the park, assuming there's a clear line of sight.
