Little to actually find?

Why does it make less sense to find the same type of biological life across the universe? If the same sort of physical properties give rise to similar kinds of geological formations, does it not follow that those same properties would give birth to similar forms of biological life?

Life just isn't that mechanistic in my view - yes, you'd likely see broadly similar characteristics under similar evolutionary pressures (similar solutions to locomotion under water, flight etc), but since each mutation (the real motor of evolution) is a product of chance, they'd also be a great deal of variation.

With regard to the game, for me it's not really a conceptual question but one of effort. I agree that the scale of the game is problematic and that repetition is inevitable in the absence of an algorithmic approach, but as far as I can see they've just created an inadequate number of assets. Plus they're essentially static with very little 'behaviour' to speak of - I just hoped for more to compliment the new tools.

Because evolution is a highly random process which leads to highly different results. While it is influenced by physical boundaries that impose limits which lead to convergent evolution (e.g. space pumpkins being round because round shapes are most optimal), especially simple life forms could have vastly different appearances. E.g. If we look at viruses, while a lot of them are spherical, not two of them look the same.

That just isn't true. That said, I'm not too invested in defending the lack of variety of the in-game assets. Beyond was a good start, but there should definitely be more to find.

I love the new exploration tools but it seems it is as I feared, there is very little to actually find besides geological stuff. I’ve traveled over 30ly so far through the Formidine and Errant Marches and, outside of nebulas, I’ve not found a single thing—no lagrange clouds, biological stuff or stellar phenomena.

From my prespective it appears all the tools are mostly good for is helping you get your name on stuff faster. Hopefully I’ve just had bad luck and there is actually a decent amount to find. I know stuff should be rare, otherwise it would become too normal, but nothing after 30,000 ly is not really good. I don’t want to have to check the codex and go see things that have already been discovered to see something cool.

It's a vast galaxy out there... I traveled 10KLy or so before finding a single NSP or somesuch, then I found then in troves. Then nothing again, and then a bunch more. Most NSP I've met are in systems which have something terraformable. They're elsewhere too, but of those which I've met most have something the silly apes ... humans ... can use.

As usual, when I read a complaint about ED, my reaction is that the people complaining have unrealistic expectations based on having played simpler games in the past.

The fact is, there are tones of things out there to find. Have you ever seen this website: https://canonn.science/codex/cartographics-exploration/

Your problem is, you are used to playing games that make you the star. You want to be the hero who makes the big discovery, and I get that, but that was never realistic in the games you used to play and it's not possible in this game. This guy summed it up:

space though, it's really, really, mind-bogglingly big. The chances of happening across any one thing are pretty improbable

If you're going to play ED at all, you need to look carefully at the following sentence, and take its message to heart: you're not special.

You are never, ever going to be special in this game. You're not going to be the guy who found the unknown probes. You're not going to be the guy who discovered how they worked. You're not going to be the guy who deciphered the message. You're not going to be the guy who found the barnacles. You're not going to be the guy who first encountered the thargoids. You're not going to be the guy who found the thargoid bases. You're not going to be the guy who found the guardian bases. You're not going to be the guy who finds a generation ship. You're not going to be the guy who finds the conflux installations, or the formadine rift installations. You're not going to be the guy who finds whatever else is in the formadine rift. You're not going to be the first guy to find any form of alien life.

All of those things and more are out there in the galaxy. There absolutely are things to find. But you're not special, and this game isn't the kind of game that bends itself to make you feel special. So you are never, ever going to be the first to find any of those things. And if you can't deal with that, then you can go play Halo and pretend that you're on the Pillar of Autumn and OMG Look! A giant ring space station!!

For all we know, there's a Halo or 12 somewhere in the ED galaxy too, but I promise you, you will not be the one to find it. That's just not how this game works.

*spits tea*

Simpler than ED?

Are you suggesting my expectations have been unfairly raised by my experiences with Noughts and Crosses?

With respect, it is possible to develop a winning strategy with Tic-tac-to.ED does not allow for this possibility.
I 'm not sure OP is complaining anyway.Didn't read like a rant to me.
