Astronomy / Space [Live] SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch today

You should have named the thread "Elon Musk's Tesla roadster is sent off into mars (*) today" :D

(*) - The car will not hit Mars, it will fly by and proceed into deep space. Who knows if some alien civilization will find it in a few millions of years?...

I can think back to the first Apollo moon landing, I was 5 years at that time, and how clumsy it looked when that Saturn V got off the pad. Today, the Falcon heavy took off, and later the boosters landed - like a ballet dancer compared to an elephant.

Truly incredible stuff. That twin rocket landing was top notch!

My inner nerd if deeply pleased. What a time to be alive :)

I lived on the Space Coast of FL for 10 years. Saw many Shuttle launches and landings over the years but this launch today blew my mind. And they managed to land 2 rockets on the ground at the same time? Epic.

Still unknown...

Last time we lost stream, the rocket had failed to deploy one of it's legs, it tumbled and exploded. Fingers crossed it's not the case this time...

TBH, even if it has failed, the mission was still more successful than anyone could rightly could have expected...

BTW - Suggestion to Elon, put 5 legs on them, that way if one fails... :)

It is actually going to be inserted into a Heliocentric Orbit - specifically a trans-Mars Heliocentric orbit. In other words it will orbit the Sun, remaining within our solar system.

Don't panic!

Glad it won't just become more space junk in near earth orbit! And i think they lost one of the boosters (it ran out of fuel and hit the ocean at 500m/s!), but considering they gave the overall mission a 50/50 chance of success, a great step forward for SpaceX :)

yep, mainthruster did run out of fuel just befor landing, still amazing performance

when i saw them 2 smaller booster land i felt like watching a SF movie

and! this makes the NASA look like kids playing with toys - KEEP GOIN ELON
