Local Disk C Problem

In the folder C/Users/
there is a Read-Only folder that gets filled up the more I play Elite: Dangerous and when I shut down the game it gets reduced.
Eventually, when C gets fully filled up the game crashes one way or another or the computer stops working.

I noticed that the folder contains like 40 GB.

What on earth is this?
And since C is not where the game is installed can I delete this?

I think it's texture caching... 40Gb is a small amount to have free on OS Drive unless it's really small. There should be at 15% clear for optimal operations. If you get rid of it, it may just fill up again anyway.

Not sure what it contains for some reason my PC doesn't let me remove the read-only quality of the files.
Most of those 40GB are at C/Users/User/AppData/Local
Be careful. Don't delete wildly in this folder as it has settings for a lot of software on your system.
The only relevant path is C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments (with a space, the one with a _ just holds configs for your launcher).

Every other folder in there belongs to other programs, so to identify the culprit (40GB cache is new to me for ED), follow @GroG79's advice and use windirstat (free) to find the exact folder.

I think there was a issue when ED Odyssey downloaded in the first alpha, the download cache filled up the C drive but it removed the files after the install was complete. Maybe it's something similar?

Thank you too, I will use the program and be careful. Before I installed Odyssey I never had this problem of my disk space getting filled up all on its own.

I never had the Alpha so I'm not sure about that but it might have something in common.

I have seen a similar problem with my C drive. Began getting "Low Disk Space" messages. ED and Firefox are the only apps I have run on this computer for several years. ED is not installed on C. Had to remove a bunch of other old apps (10 GB) to make room on C so I could keep playing ED. Now the disk is almost full again. What's up with this?

What is the name of the read-only folder?
My problem is solved but the 40 GB of taken up space didn't have anything to do with Elite so apologies :(

I used the program Windirstart as suggested by GroG79 and I found out that media cache files from the editing program Adobe Premiere Pro have been gathering up - deleting them freed up space - 39 GB of it so it had nothing to do with Elite.

The problem still persists, the more I stay in Elite, the more C Disk fills up but with 40 GB freed up it is not a problem anymore, and as soon as I stop the game the space that started filling up since the start of the session disappears.

Otherwise, the read-only folder associated with ED is C/Users/User/AppData/EpicGamesLauncher

For example i had 39.4 GB of free space before I launched Elite, now 2 hours later I got 35.4. As soon as I close the game I will be back at 39.4 or whatever it was before I started.

Glad you got it sorted. What was the folder, and did you diagnose whether you could bin it or not? Just curious.

This is the folder but sorry again: the problem it seems, is not really Elite-related.

The GB I freed up were media cache files from Adobe Premiere so they had nothing to do with Elite.

That being said, the problem still kind of persists. Every time I play Elite up to 5 GB of space is taken from Local Disk C but now with more than 39 GB freed up that's not a problem. When I end the game the 5GB of space gets freed up. I can't really figure out in which folder these 5 GB are created, maybe I will try and figure that out.

Windirstart is very useful, it very clearly shows where the GB are.

From then on, it depends on the types of files you have. Mine were media cache and they were perfectly okay to delete.
