Is there a way (or if not, will there be a way) of locking gimbaled weapons in a forward position when targeting ship?
Not AFAIK. But I'm confused. Why would you want to do that?
I think it would be a good shout to have this as an added feature, fixed weps can be used to directly target specific things rather than just randomly pummelling the target.
Incase your target has gone silent...If that's the case the gimbals won't track him. But I kinda think that's a trade off you're going to have to live with if you choose to go with gimballed weapons.

It makes 0 sense for gimballed weapons and turrets not to be able to work as fixed ones.This.
Having a weapon that does both, invalidates the weapon that does only one thing. To make a silly example, it'd be like having a weapon that fired ballistic rounds and lasers.

All good points. I was thinking for countering the chaff launcher as well...you have the a trade off with gimbals being lower damage as it is and lock on time is slow if you are in a twitchy fight with a nimble ship!
Just putting it out there really
oooo...ballistic-lazors ;-)

The tradeoff is that fixed weapons of the same class are more powerful than gimballed ones.

Then you get what you want? Gimbals are fixed when not tracking a target.Incase your target has gone silent...If that's the case the gimbals won't track him. But I kinda think that's a trade off you're going to have to live with if you choose to go with gimballed weapons.
How so? Does a fully automatic AK-47 when switched to semi-auto to fire single shot , invalidate a single shot semi-auto?Single rounds from each can kill you just as dead.
If I disengage radar control from a missile firing system, and use manual aiming, does that mean that solely manual control missile systems are not valid means of missile firing?
A value of most modern weapon systems, is the ability to switch between control methods as the present battle scenario dictates to be the most effective. Ie. A Missile on auto acquisition may lock on to the barn silo instead of the terrorist in the barn door. Switch to manual and aim at the terrorists real position. A manually operated weapon system can often be the most
Effective.
