Newcomer / Intro Logitech 3D Extreme Pro (how to map controller)

Hello, I bought Elite: Dangerous a few months ago and started using the PC X Box 360 controller with it, it worked but not great then an errant rabbit chewed through the cable (don’t ask) and I put everything to one side- I realised I could repair the controller but I also realised that at least a decent joystick would be better (a full featured HOTAS being out of my price range). I settled on a Logitech 3D Extreme Pro based on price and features since I hadn’t really had time to see if I had the elite ‘bug’ so the expense would almost certainly be confined to playing Elite.

However I don’t know how to set up a suitable profile, worse I don’t even have enough experience of the game to logically place functions. Out of the box I get the X/Y/Z from the stick, the boost off one of the stick buttons and hard points will deploy when the trigger is pressed and retract with one of the buttons on the base. My wireless mouse and keyboard seem to have very limited function but I’d like to limit the need for them anyway. I do imagine, in the future, that I could attach the Xbox controller as a secondary input but that can wait a while.

I have Googled and I’m lost, can anyone help me in noob language, thanks in advance.

If Elite is reconizing your joystick I believe the game has a default setup for that joystick. And you can at least make your own costumize setup for it, in options/controls here you can setup all activities for both you joystick as well as the Keyboard/mouse and your 360 controller if you wish just make sure they are all plucked in before starting the game...

I think the best way is to use Elites default settings and then customize that profile to make it suite your needs perfectly, you are the one who's using it so you are also the one who knows best how to customize the controls to your likings...

good lock with cmdr. and take you time seting things up properly it will pay off later and don't hesitate to change things if you during combat find that some of the initial settings needs a twist for easier use...

I am not familiar with that joystick, I'm afraid.
But a good way to do the initial setup is to fire up the game (With keyboard defaults) and select launch. Now, first time you are launching, you are required to do a flight controls checklist. These are the controls that are necessary for basic flying the ship. (there are tons more, but they can usually be handled through menus, or you only need them later in the game)
So just take a note of all the things there, then go to options and bind those. (they are pretty self-explanatory) Then you'll be able to at least fly around and learn the ropes. As you will progress and learn new things, you will be tweaking the binds to your liking many times, anyway.

OP, beware: it is a slippery slope. First you find yourself enjoying the LE3DPro. Next thing you know you want a throttle to go with it. Turns out you NEED that throttle...
After a while you realise that a track ir might come in handy and maybe some pedals.
By this time next year you'll be saving up for that deal on a Vive VR. Seriously. You're going down a very addictive path. I also started with the LE3DPro and now I have a Fighterstick and Pro Throttle and I've got the credit card itching to go on a set of pedals and the Vive is do to come out in April... Just saying.

Thank-you this is what I was looking for, I realise I may well adapt this over time but it provides a starting point. I note you don’t use all the base buttons on the joystick, is that just choice or is there something deeper going on there?

I still need to work out how to actually map things to the joystick but I will have a go at that today. I really want to get into this game but there is a bit of a barrier for those of us who are later adopters- I know that debate goes on but like it or not new users like hand-holding and Elite: Dangerous is a complex game. At the same time Logitech should be helping out here by supplying a profile.

I realise this, in fact it will be worse than that if I get bitten as I’m only running an AMD A8K/ 8GB/ and a last generation good quality discrete graphics card.

However I have to start somewhere and my system runs the game on High (although Medium might end up being more usable) and if I don’t get into the game then the extra investment in HOTAS and so on can’t be justified on my budget. If I do get into it I’ll just keep saving up while playing with what I have.

Take your time. Don't grind for anything and enjoy getting used to just flying, docking, shooting with fixed weapons, adjusting pips etc. I'd suggest just mapping basic things to the le3dpro at first (pitch/yaw/roll and a few others you can map for one handed use). Don't bother much with the throttle and base buttons until you are comfortable with everything you can reach with just the one hand. Use the keyboard for everything else.
Later on, you'll want to map those base buttons and have a thumb on that throttle (but don't rush it). Once you get used to that you will find there's more commands you'll want to map away from the keyboard but don't have room left on the stick. That's where a throttle comes in. At this point you either get a CH pro throttle (one of the few standalone throttles for sale and quite good quality but not cheap) or you'll want to go to something else that includes a throttle but isn't so expensive (Thrustmaster Tflight HOTAS or maybe an x52).
By the time you have everything mapped and comfortable for your use on the le3dpro you'll know if you like the game enough to invest more into a HOTAS. I ended up enjoying it so much I could not imagine playing a flight game without it.

Here's info on how I've set up the stick:

The whole point is when your in combat ( Dogfights ) you do not want your hand off the controls ...

The game pad is where the Throttle & Thrusters are setup ( still refining that )...

The Joystick is setup for " NO THINK " very basic (pitch: up - down / roll: left - right / yaw: left - right) Weapons, Target Lock & Acquisition, Triggers, Jump, View ...

As you get comfortable with your finger placement you then can add more controls ( TWEEKING) ...

I been doing Sims since C64 to now... ( I have HOTAS - X-52 , Cougar, Microsoft FF, Logitech Force 3D Pro ) plus many more from over the years ...

I tend to setup for "Comfort / Function" - go slow and have fun...

Shoot up rock first ...

If I can help more - drop me a note ...

I'm using exactly this HOTAS and this is my Config :

ELITE-Logitech_Extreme_3D_pro.jpg

(excuse my lame MS Paint skills :D )

PS.
Always be aware that most Navigation/Interface/Target/Thruster Controls can be dual-mode, they allow multiple assignments.
Hence, I used the Coolie Hat and some Buttons for Interface Modes (automatically active when inside any Station Menu or Ship Info Panel) - but also use them for Thruster control and Targeting.

Very useful, as these dual assignments (Interface - Thrusters - Targeting) are permitted and do not interfere with each other.
Saves alot of Buttons few Joysticks have, yet works like a charm.

Very good advice and almost exactly how I had it when I used my le3dpro (only difference is I had strafes set to the base buttons and targeting on the hat).
