logitech joystick

I'm new to Elite (last playing on a zx spectrum). What I've so far seen has me egaer to dive in!!. I've acquired a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Precision Joystick. However I'm not getting it up in options as controller choice. What am I doing wrong?

Can't be sure as I don't own this joystick but I don't think all joysticks will appear as options, I believe there are just a few of the more common sticks predifined ie the X52.

I suspect you may have to select whatever looks closest and manually configure from there.

If this is indeed the case, good luck, ED has a lot of buttons to press! But a close match as a starting point should get you most of the way there.

Back when I started playing E: D, I had the same stick. IIRC I chose the empty preset, or generic joystic preset, and changed/added bindings to my liking. I had a scheme in my mind (mimicking the control scheme I used in Oolite), which made things a bit easier.

The amount of controls may feel daunting, but do not despair. :)
Remember, there are lots of controls that do not need to be bound ever, and if at first you miss some you might need, you can add them later.

If you feel completely lost, here's one possible starting point with some explanations:
The file may or may not work with current version of E: D, but the descriptions alone may be of some help. :)

External camera controls can overlap flight controls, which shouldn't be a problem if you're not planning to make some fancy 3rd person flying videos.

Tried logging back in still and going to options, then empty buttons not recognised for binding. Only other visible options classic keyboard, keyboard and mouse, Keyboard and mouse with yaw. So it not that I can't bind, its that the joystick isn't there as an option to bind with. Disconnected the joystick and connected my Microsoft pc controller. Logged back in and up the controller popped as an option. Playing it seems to work ok, so the issue seems to be with the joystick. the pads, much better than mouse / keyboard, but really want to use the joystick

^That. Not all controllers have a default setup in the drop down. Chose M+KB, start making binds and it will change to custom. Custom will be what you will use from now and into the future and you will inherit the default keyboard binds as a fallback.

I assume you can see & calibrate the stick in Windows, problem is E: D seemingly not recognising it?

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing with bindings:
There is no ready preset for the 3D pro in game to choose from. You need to modify an existing one or populate the empty one.
Did you try to change a control in a preset with the stick in?
That happens by opening options/controls, selecting a group and clicking the box besides the control you wish to assign/change and applying desired control.
For example click "flight rotation" and then the box right of text "roll axis" and then deflect your stick, you should see [JOY X-AXIS] appear in the box.

Can't seem to get as far as your suggestions. get as far as your third image (move access for roll access). I move joystick, nada, will not recognise inputs on joystick. Looking at things win 10 does not appear to show the joystick either , don't recall a plug and play message coming up. The PC controller did and that's an older design. So would next step be driver install from Logitech?

I have used that joystick (wanted to see if I liked a twist stick for combat - answer no) - I selected Generic Joystick from the drop down list and then proceeded to add binds for the various buttons and axes.

So It does work.

Humm.. there is no generic joystick option displayed. So can't bind. Were you on win 10? Did you have install any drivers ? looking at the drop down tab, plenty of controller options (advanced control pad advanced control pad 2, control pad, control pad with yaw, along with the regular mouse keyboard.

Download a device driver. jeez when are we? the 1990's ? o_O Logitech you let me down.

No you don't need drivers.

Go to your Devices and Printers page in windows - select the joystick (if it isn't shown then it is broken), right click select Game Controller Settings - then select that joystick in the list and click properties - now you can test the axes and buttons and also calibrate if you wish.

Windows sees joysticks as HID-compliant game controllers. If windows sees it then Elite will see it as a joystick and recognise the axes and buttons.

Could be. You might want to try plugging it in a different USB port, preferably after unplugging it and a PC restart (you know, Windows), just to make sure the stick is dead.

Fer sure, especially if you're using an unpowerd USB Hub.

Should see something pop up in device manager too.

Will try that but have unplugged and turned off, but using an usb extension as slots not easy to get at.

Not a hub just extension cable.

well generic joystick is now show, so yeah looks like down to port or cable, why is its always the last thing we try oh hum. thanks everyone, will try binding later tonight, but baby steps. Hopefully this will stop me starting a new thread on "what the best joystick for Elite? :) Also somebody said they didn't like this stick for yawing, why is that?

The yaw (twist stick) tend to wear out (does not center correctly.) over time, and will probably need a twist dead zone after a while. Twist sticks for yaw are not ideal in that they make it harder to get pure roll/pitch when twisting the stick. It still works acceptable given the relatively low cost compared to most of the other options.
