Anyone know a good place to mine these materials? I'm getting a little from LHS 6427 A 3, but it's slow going (which I suspected might be the case no matter where I go). If there's a better source for this stuff though, please let me know. I'm new to mining/engineering.

You don't mine them. You collect them in your srv on a planet surface.

To select the right landable body, open the system map, select a landable body, and the tab second fron right(?) will have a list of the materials found on the surface and a percentage designating rarity.

To collect them, drive around paying attention to your scanner, eventually you will encounter an outcrop or meteorite (white square on on radar). Shoot it, open your cargo hatch and collect.

Almost every planet has those 5, but if you check out the system map and pick a planet, you can see what it has on the surface.

Wrong. Very, very, very wrong.

Every time I mine, I have to throw away hundreds, and occasionally thousands of these materials.

If you specifically want materials, metal-rich rings is the place to go.

edit - I'm not kidding about throwing away thousands of mats, I keep records when I mine, as I am working out the best places for mining rare materials. Nothing at all rare about the 5 mats the OP wants.

If that's the case then why am I only getting a few units of iron every 10 minutes? Am I supposed to mine for hours and hours to get a handful of this stuff? Where in the galaxy do I go to find them if not on planets as everyone else has suggested.

If all you want are materials, go to a metal rich ring. Don't take a refinery, so your limpets ignore the mineral fragments and only pick up materials. Make sure you have an A-rated prospector, it will increase the number of fragments. Look for medium and high content roids, which are pretty common in metal-rich rings.
Use a ship with a good power distributor, and take as many medium mining lasers as it will handle. I use 4 mining lasers on my Cutter. Combat ships are pretty good for material mining. I have a Vulture kitted for mining parked near a ring with good tungsten.

Okay Lizard, I'll give that a try

EDIT: Heeeelll with that. I've never had so many complicated issues in this game than mining planetary rings. For the stuff I need, riding around on my SRV has become 100 times more productive.
