[LORE & OOC] My ship just exploded. What does this mean for a character?

I've started writing a post for the "introduce your commander" thread and thought it might be funny to put in some of the stupid mistakes I've made while flying. Then I realised I don't actually know what happens in universe, aside from the insurance cost, when you blow up?

It could be cloning if you are Empire I would guess. Some sort of nano-construction if not. What are the differences physically and ethically?*

What aspects of your mind are saved? Is it assumed you 'back yourself up' whenever you enter a station or is your mind transmitted to your backup point on ship destruction? From an RP perspective it would be the difference between having to be told or read somewhere that Cmdr Jerkbag killed you and knowing at the moment of your rebirth that Cmdr Jerkbag killed you.

I apologise if this has been raised before but the threads I found addressing death/destruction all focus on the game mechanics, (penalties, ability to grief, whether to penalise disconnects due to inability to check legitimacy etc), but nothing about what it means to the pilot. People die and respawn in video games, what is there to discuss?

So, thoughts (or a re-direct for me) from an RP perspective.

*Idea? A clone is grown in a tank, brain activity and bodily functions take place naturally and it could theoretically go on to live an independent life. Thus your mind overwriting the clone kills the clone in an ultimate 'a thinking being is property' expression. A nano-constructed human is built when needed, has no brain activity or capacity to perform bodily functions on its own and if it does not receive a personality matrix quickly will cease to function.

Dagnabbit. Spent ages trawling multi-page threads on destruction and blowing up.... It's there under death.

Many thanks.

i though you died and your consciousness got re-uploaded to a new clone. like in eve. how do you explain instantly reappearing in a free sidewinder at the nearest station? what if your 1000s of ly from the nearest station? there is no way a pod travels 1000 ly in one second.

I say, the only rp-conform way to play is Ironman. That indestructible-Stuff is just plain boring, it sucks all the tension, all the... reason out of RP.

I agree

I agree. I'd probably roleplay my character as being wounded. Maybe a prosthetic depending on how you want to go about it. I'd assume the pod has a distress beacon. I'll definitely be choosing Ironman when it comes out. 100+ bounties collected so far, and not a single claim on my ship yet. Did all my dieing in Beta. TONS of it.
