I agree with the points you make, but it is not even about ships for me.I agree.
I realized this some time ago (back in 2019), and that's where I started to be more cynical.
It seems that only the players can see the true potential... probably because they PLAY THE GAME.
I can understand a dev spend his free time far from his pc and prefers to do not work related stuff so I don't blame them for this.
I blame them because they have a passionate community that have been flooding them for years with suggestions for improvements and new features and they never considered any of them.
Just a stupid example... the community is waiting for a new SRV since Horizons launch. I feel embarrassed for them for the lack of it at Odyssey launch. Same for the Panther Clipper or any new ship.... A new DLC with a new ship is kind of given... how come the failed to see it?
For me the biggest problem is the stagnant state of fundamental gameplay mechanics.
When FDev improved asteroid mining and added more interesting exploration mechanics I was as happy as can be, and I fully expected they would also have a look at the lacking smuggling and scavenging gameplay, piracy and bounty hunting, add a solid npc ship crew mechanic, add a true planetary mining mechanic (with a mining SRV perhaps), improve the diversity in the bubble by adding more station models, add more interesting radar and scan mechanics, improve the player agency and piloting mechanics in Supercruise. etc. etc. In general: add more depth and tune down the superficiality.
But all this fundamental stuff never came to pass. FDev does not seem to realize that an open ended, open world game that is constructed as a service, depends on good solid, engaging mechanics, because it does not have a story campaign to distract from the lacking aspects of these mechanics.
Even several devs have stated on Glassdoor that the senior staff did not seem to realize that modern gamers are more demanding than they were 30 years ago.
Gameplay mechanics and diversity need to be improved most urgently!
For many players the multiplayer aspect can perhaps serve as a band aid for the lack in gameplay depth, but for me as a soloist the shortcomings in this department have become painfully clear after all these years. It was the potential and the hope that kept me defending the way the game was developed, but after 7 years I feel no longer justified to do so.
