Newcomer / Intro Lost encrypted data canister

I was doing a recover encrypted data canister mission. I managed to locate it and collect it. I was heading back when my ship overheated and exploded.

1) Why did my ship overheat? I was nowhere near a star.
2) How do I stop it overheating when it starts? Shields down. Could not get them back up.
3) I am now told I have to find the canister again. Can't find it. I'm in the right system. I have used FSS and it is not there. I have looked on navigation and flown to all the unknown signals. Not there either?

Complete noob. Don't know what I'm doing. Don't know what to do now. Don't want to abandon the mission. That would be defeatist.

1) Depends - Supercruise or Normal Space? If Normal Space it's usually turning on Silent Running accidentally. SC ... 🤷‍♀️ no idea if not a star
2) That again sounds like Silent Running. Shields come back if you turn it off
3) You can't. Once you pick up all the cargo and die you have failed - discard the mission and move on. If you haven't picked up all the cargo it would give you more attempts, but it sounds like you are out of luck.

It's always the cat's fault even if they do look at you with that big-eyed, innocent "What?" face.

One of ours likes to switch the cable box off if not enough attention is being spent on them.

I have just blamed the cat for crashing into a planet whislt writing this message.
