General / Off-Topic Lost in space

OK - this is a variation on threads I have been involved in on other forums, some more successful than others.

The premise of this thread is to suggest you commanders EDC (Every Day carry for the uninitiated), or Emergency Bug Out kit.

There are a few rules.

  1. You are limited to a maximum of 5 items.
  2. You may only have 1 item that is a weapon.
  3. All items must be "pocketable" (They might not actually fit in a pocket, but they must not be too big).
  4. Ideally items should come from popular sci-fi (butthey are not limited to this).

Note, my knowledge of sci-fi is actually quite limited

In no specific order I will choose

  1. A Star Trek Phaser as this "weapon" has so many uses from stun gun and killing machine to cutting tool and heating a rock and turning it into a camp-fire. I was going to choose a Star Wars Light Saber, but whilst I personally prefer the class, elegance and style of the Light Saber, I felt the phaser was a better "tool".
  2. Item 2 has to be the Swiss army knife of popular Sci-Fi - the Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver. This needs no introduction, or explanation.
  3. In place of the Light Saber, but not a weapon, I give you the Laser Bread Knife from the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.
  4. My next choice is actually 2 items, the MiB Neuralyzer and the sunglasses that go with it.
  5. I shall close with..... A towel.

sorry, your dead - no towel :(

I shall choose

1) A Babylon 5 ppg pistol. I need a weapon that goes bzzzt when loaded and you can snap in a charge to look heroic before a fight.

2) A jedi cloak to keep me warm.

3) A copy of the hitch-hiker's guide

4) A towel to go with my guide and

5) A remlok mask! In space everyone can hear me scream!

1) A hip-flask of Leestian brandy

2) Han Solo's blaster. I'll always shoot first. (No jokes now, there are sensitive men present on this forum.)

3) CmdrBond has already taken the sonic screwdriver, so it looks like I'm stuck with Sarah Jane Smith's sonic lipstick

4) I'm taking the psychic paper too

5) And finally, the Aliens motion tracker. Could come in handy when raiding derelict vessels.

There is nothing stopping you choosing something someone else has chosen.

I must admit that I was tempted by the psychic credit card ;)

1. Zatnikatel ( Stargate, one shot stuns , two kills , three disintigrates)

2. Tricorder , got to be better than alien motion detector, gets you out of all sorts....

3. Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses, that turn totally black when exposed to peril or VideoGlasses that have optical elements allowing the user to see in all directions at the same time. (HHGTTG , Douglas Adams, and Islands in the Net by Bruce Sterling)

4. Null Suit , not actually a hand carriable item as you have a lung removed to make space for the unit, but it projects a forcefield that acts like a space suit.

5. Magnetic boots for hitch-hiking on the outside of ships for those moments of need.

Small objects of desire

1. A sick stick out of Minority Report. I'm a bit of a coward and I doubt I'd be able to kill anyone. I wouldn't like my morals affecting my reaction time. The sick stick is something I could use without any qualms. I might even use it on random passers by.

2. Orac out of Blakes 7. He might be an annoying git but he knows a thing or two. He might be able to give me some sound advice.

3. MiB Neuralyzer.
"Hey! put that back! I saw you take that!",
"I want you to look at this light..."

4. Not a gun, but a device that can get you out of a tight corner. The portal gun. I'm sure I'll get used to that metal taste in my mouth.

5. The eigenstate mod out of Quarantine by Greg Egan. Actually, I'm not sure about that one. I think I'll press the button to collapse the wavefunction and go for a more improbable answer.

"Box! Book a table at the restaurant for me."
"I'm sorry. That service is not available in this part of the galaxy."
