Lost tracking for about 15 seconds in a Python...I'm back in the free Sidey now...

Well I'm quite new to this game, started in VR right off the bat about two weeks ago. It's quite an amazing game in VR!
Not so amazing when I lose tracking in an asteroid field with my newly aquired Python though. I didnt have enough for insurance and I'm back in a free Sidewinder now.

Just thought it share that with you.

Any tips?
Do devs have the power to rewind this sort of thing?
Anyone have a stockpile of napkins I can cry in?

The main tip would be to never fly without insurance. I have made my own mistakes that have been costly. Got to within 200ly of SAG A and accidentally pancaked into a planet surface. I did have insurance but lost all the data money. You win some, you lose some.

Insurance is mandatory. 2x insurance is good. 3x insurance is better. You can have runs of bad luck after all. You can encounter a persistent CMDR or groups of CMDRs. You can lose a hold full of rares. You can lose exploration data like Max said.

You can certainly throw yourself upon the mercy of customer services, through a support ticket, but, the best advice is to swallow the loss, put it down to a learning experience and move on.

Equally ,there are Commanders out there who might drop a few tonnes of precious metal to help you get back on your feet.

Whatever happens, Fly safe Commander, and watch out for those rocks.

Must be pretty gutting man, I take it wasn't A graded and Engineered though after only two weeks?

Another CMDR I play with regularly builds up from Ship to Ship, buys one kits it out then sells and upgrades.
He just got himself all the way to an Anaconda, about 200 million + worth and for some reason he was flying without rebuy credits, Station open fired when he got near and he found himself back in the beginner Sidewinder with no other Ships to his name!

Do you have a Rift with one sensor?

I got the Touch with the second sensor. I haven't played with the touch at all yet, but the second sensor makes tracking absolutely flawless in ED. It also makes walking around the cockpit and getting out and walking around the SRV much better experiences.

Also, imho, take the game a little more slowly and enjoy the smaller ships (build up that insurance nestegg).

To my experience, which might be very incomplete, loss of tracking only happens due to obscuring the rift (not to talk about defective hardware). The sensor(s) always need free view of the headset's surface - there are IR emitters right under the surface, even in the strap on the back side. Long hair, scratching head, moving your hands or arms upwards or a cat running along your desktop might cover the view of the sensor and you loose tracking. It might happen that you're not centered correctly if tracking comes back, leaving you looking sideways or backwards or placing you behind the pilot chair. Then, you're better not in an asteroid field at full throttle without insurance. My tip: Throttle back. If it happens during combat: Pray. And always have the "center vr view" button quickly accessible.

sometimes when people complain enough to FD FD cave and reinstate your stuff... personally i am not saying this is a good thing, but it has happened.

funnily enough the other day, also in rift, i was playing, everything had worked flawlessly for a few hrs in a wing of 3 in a RES. out of the blue my framerate tanked - i got the hour glass thing come up in the HMD - and after maybe 20s when it all settled down every ship in the instance was red attacking me.

I *just* got out without a rebuy

but bottom line, you have to have stuff in reserve for problems..... i have had a few issues over the last few years, some costing me a few hrs in play, but NEVER EVER fly without insurance, even if it means parking up and going out in a starter ship for a few hrs.

Yup, I've had my cat pull a USB cable out of the port whilst docking. Did not realise (I usually dock fast) until I noticed the throttle still at full half way through the station when the ship wasn't slowing down.

Sorry but that made me LOL :D

Run the Oculus Compatibility Checker tool to verify if your USB chipset the sensor is plugged into is compatible with the Rift if you hadn't already done so. You should never lose tracking unless there is something obstructing the sensor view or there is some kind of hardware issue. It will happen again unless you fix it.

The Rift requires a lot of dedicated USB bandwidth--among other resources--so hubs are a no-no.

Unless you're using the Touch and move around for other games, ED should work fine with a single sensor. I have 3--two plugged in--but performance is the same as with one so I didn't even plug in the 3rd one. No need.

LOL, two weeks in the game and flying a Python?
I did at least a year of hard work for that.
I flew at least 5 other ships before I could finally afford the Python.

Man you'll be flying a new Python within a week now.
No need to invoke the devs.
For you this should be a meaningless loss.

One of each - The Bengal is an Imperialist, I am confident of that. Though, he seems to think he is the Emperor... The black kitty is a... Actually, I think she's an Anarchist pirate...

Well, money is a LOT easier nowadays. There are dozens of youtube video showing you where to go and usually stack 20 missions, stick some missiles on a tiny ship, blow up a buncha skimmers from a safe distance, and make hundreds of millions in 4 seconds. As a consequence you see a lot of people flying the best the game has to offer within a very short timespan. Question is, will they soon get tired of the game having nothing more to strive for other than the 'honor' of Elite?

That happen to me a few times back when I had a dk2. Just like you I've only played in VR. What happened to me more often is my head would fall into my lap in the middle of a fight. That was so annoying. All of the small tracking issues I had with dk2 made look into how the Vive was going to do tracking. I liked the solution they came up with as it seemed to address the issue a camera solution has. All of the little tracking issues I had with a dk2 are gone with the Vive
