Horizons Major problem with simple mission

I have to snag trade data for a salvage contract.
I fly in low wake as slow as possible to be able to see the target. It always shows at aprox 150 kms.
I hit J to drop out of wake. The target disappears as it flies past me. It is always in the same place, but I can't stop on a penny.
My speedo slows down in about 2 seconds, but all the searching in all points of the compass yield nothing.
I tried keeping straight and when stationary, I turn the ship up and over in a straight line. Nothing there.

Can somebody explain, please, am i doing something wrong or is this a bug. (200,000 crs is a lot to abandon.)

sorry, I don't understand what you mean here. are you trying to go into a low wake?

I have heard that sometimes the item in question can start falling rapidly toward a nearby planet. Are you near a planet?

Did you check your Contacts panel to see what else is in the instance?

Other than that, I don't know.

To the others:

I believe what OP is saying is that when he drops into the target instance, the item he needs to collect goes flying past him, because his ship is still moving. And by the time he stops his ship, he cannot find the item anywhere.

Start with this, what is the target, how do you get there.. I assume you are flying in normal space (outside of supercruise), but how did you get there first? following a signal?

I'm pretty sure when he says "I fly in low wake" that he means "I fly in supercruise". Then when he says "drop out of wake" he means "drop out of supercruise". He's just using the word wake instead of supercruise for some reason.

I think it is the opposite, because when he presses J the target fly pasts him.. also, in SC nothing stands for too long at 150km :/

Come on OP, we can't help you yet

I thought that part meant he tried letting his ship come to a stop without turning, and then flipped it 180 (with pitch) to look directly behind. What do you think?

We need a translator! :)

Specially for the:
I tried keeping straight and when stationary, I turn the ship up and over in a straight line. Nothing there.

You are very damn good at this!!! :)

Artigan99 nailed it.
The 180 degree flip was correct. I went back and tried one more time and what the heck, it showed at 150km then when I hit J it was a bit over 500km in front of me.

I don't think I did anything wrong except confuse ilo. (Sorry 'bout that matey)

but you still didn't explain what are you trying to do!!! we might need you to be more descriptive about the first parts of your problem!

If you're trying to scoop up trade data with acrobatics, and succeed, you are way better than me. I do it with collector limpets. Target your data canister in the contacts section of your port HUD, light off the limpet and off it goes and recovers your canister and self-destructs after delivery. Multiple canisters, multiple single target limpets. You avoid useless collections of cargo by programming one limpet per target. Best yet, take along a two-limpet controller, get in, get out. Avoid the pesky flies that come to the sugar.

Make sure you have the cargo door open for the limpet's return. Don't forget to close the cargo door if and when you have to bug out.

The mission is : "Trade data salvage contract for refinery."
Go to target system, and if you are lucky, the mission giver says "scan was completed. Go to such and such planet, or where ever.
I go to the planet and a signal is there (hopefully) that has the data to be scooped up.
rrobes: I only just started to try these missions in the Cobra, so I need room for an SRV. The first one I did was on a planet surface. Never know where the data will be.

then, your problem is gliding to the POI in the planet? I still don't see how you can go from 150km to 500km in a second if it is not in SC.

Ok, as far as my experience has been, any trade data salvage for refinery has been a space mission. You take the mission, you go to the first system, scan the data beacon, and it tells you to go to another planet (ah, the mini-grind). You get to that location and you bump around until you get a message, highlighted in blue, this is the one you want, the yellow ones you can ignore unless you want to amuse yourself. Select the target USS and disengage when you get the message. You will find the items there and sometimes hostile ships. Then you do what I outlined in my previous post, assuming you brought collector limpet controller and limpets.

Ahaaa, ilo, didn't realise what you needed to know.
The POI was away from the planet a bit. I do carry the SRV in case it was on the surface. Until you arrive in the system you don't know if the POI will be in space or on a planet surface.
And I have been whinging about supercruise before. I just got interdicted. Submitted. and still got chucked around the system.
(Sorry. Different whinge)

No, rrobes, didn't get limpets. I actually like to scoop up the target. It was a nuisance though when two blokes just interdicted me. had to run.

If you have the signal selected and you are within the speed/distance range, when you jump out of SuperCruise you should appear right in the signal.
If you don't have it selected, you don't get a lock on it, then even if you are close when you jump out of SC you may still land 150km away from it.
Could this be the problem? I guess no, because if you don't have the lock when jumping out of SC then the signal just disappears..
the more I try to understand, the more I think it can be a bug..

Yes. I wondered that. Did another since talking and at first you target it. Then drop out of SC. And if all goes well, you see the items in front of you.
My problem was when I dropped out of SC the items were not there. Sometimes as I approached, I got to the drop out point and when I pressed J it would seem as if something flew past the ship.
Yes! A bug! I just realized that when you target the poi it should be rendered on the left of the cockpit. It wasn't being rendered.

Hmm. I seem to recall a problem in earlier builds whereby if you had a station targeted through the Nav panel, but also had another ship targeted through the target selection bindings, it would prevent the Safe Disengage feature from working even if the speed and distance were correct. You'd shoot past the Nav target and drop out at a very long distance if you pressed the SC exit button.

I thought this had been fixed but it sounds very similar to what the OP describes. Maybe the bug is still there (or came back) and I don't see it because I got used to deselecting weapons targets when approaching a Nav target. I'm not able to test the game right now but I'll give it a go when I'm next at the PC, unless someone can verify or refute this theory in the meantime.

Edit: the bug has not resurfaced; see below.
