There is a whole bunch of ship/srv/on foot balancing that FDev need to do. It feels like 3 games bolted together sometimes (because they are?). I agree with what you say. FDev states that players never need to buy a ship, so how do they unlock geo codex? How do on feet players find bio hotspots on planets without the heat map? Why is the SRV useless for biologicals? How do on foot players 'rent' an SRV if they don't have a ship? If FDev think about the role of ship/srv/feet and their balance and make them complementary, this will be fantastic.
Very much this.
There's no single part of Elite, Horizons, or Odyssey that can be THE thing that needs connecting up, the whole thing needs another pass. Part of that would be doing to Odyssey what they did with Horizons and roll it into the base game. You buy Elite Dangerous, you get Horizons and Odyssey by default. Legacy can still exist, but for all intents and purposes, Odyssey IS Elite. From that point we can start to bring some verisimilitude to the whole game. All game loops consider all approaches to the task; collect canisters and carry them to a ship/SRV, check, scan datapoints with handheld tools, check, find biological signals using a ship based wave scanner, check, etc, etc.
Missions are missions, no different boards in different places depending on the content you want to do. Make the NPC given missions more specialised and higher risk vs. reward to give them more flavour. A proper command of all aspects should be vital to truly mastering the game.
