If it were an alien event it should have concequences for unprovoked attacks by the fool hardy or over confident.
Like say a clear save, then it would really be a force to be reckoned with and not taken lightly.
The mechanic could be something like a data virus removing all traces of you from the weak human infrastructure.
Then you end up in a starter system in a side with the Base line credits....
Too nasty.
How about if the encounter goes wrong there is a flashy effect and you find yourself in
suggestion 1 , a loaned (no resale value but does have a rebuy price) Sidewinder docked in a random station that doesn't have one of your ships in, your previous ship is reported as being stored at a military station elsewhere
Suggestion 2, an unidentifiable strange sounding craft that seems to be roughly equivalent to a Hauler there is a message saying that your empty ship was found and is being towed away for investigation.

Watched both BSG along with heaps of other sci-fi and read loads of sci-fi recently the ark royal series humanities first encounter with aliens as they expand in the galaxy and currently the empire corps series the collapse of an earth centred empire.
Ive worked in flight simulation for the last 30 odd years, so the simulation side of ED is what interests me more than the fun gamey options.
Just to give you all an idea of who is behind this daft topic - yes I'd like the game to be less easy but I realise a lot of folks would disagree and wonder what people would like to see of the alien menace if it is that.
I would like this thing today not to be the big alien menace but something unexpected.
