"Malfunction or Malice?"

My point was they had no wreckage to work with in assessing the cause of the explosion or what happened to the president. There's literally nothing mentioned about it and the article somewhat contradicts itself by blatantly saying there is no wreck, nothing of the ship found at all but they somehow know what happened(4 fail safe failures) and for five days previous there was no word on what happened to the ship other than "It's missing."

Besides that, my interpretation of current events are 1. The obvious Powerplay theory(Vie for power, revenge from another faction) or 2. Thargoids. 2. makes more sense to me mainly because I want it to... but realistically Thargoids have been gearing up for some time now with the beacons(At least we think it's Thargoids). It would make sense to release Powerplay first -- getting people used to the idea of fighting for a faction and being part of a group or sub group within an empire -- then release the Thargoid Wars/Invasion where players are already united under a faction to fight for them against this threat. After all, we know Thargoids definitely will be coming sooner or later. They may be an expansion or they may be the last big update before an expansion but having a major figure head go missing under these circumstances would serve as a great way to hype Thargoids and add to the lore, plus there's always the option of the presidents ship limping back with information on the Thargoids and the president(If he survives) driving a heavy military to try counter what he witnessed. That or there could be video logs of what happened on the ship to stoke the fire.

It would make more sense especially when you consider Elite: Dangerous is six months old now. We could expect an expansion around the year mark which isn't too far away on the scale of things and it will most likely be a Thargoid invasion or planetary landing/planetary atmosphere combat.

If I were to be honest I would say the expansions would go in this order:

1. Thargoids.
2. Planetary landings/combat/flight.
3. More detailed space stations and first person free roaming.

Thargoids wouldn't be an expansion, I don't see how they could make it into an expansion but it wouldn't make sense if it's just adding another unique and very aggressive faction to the game. We'll most likely get two expansions: Planetary bases and combat/flight and the second expansion being first person and being able to go into ships and what not.
