The nostalgic side of me would love to see ALL of the original games ships. It's just not quite Elite without them. For me, personally speaking, the original game was far superior to Frontier: Elite II; despite only being able to pilot the Cobra mk.III. Frontier was so heavily weighted towards trading, it didn't have the balance of the original. There was some cool stuff added, obviously; Landing on planets, the bulletin board etc. . . I think back of Frontier; how long it took me to buy a new ship, ouch! Looking around to find somewhere, where I could not only find the ship available in the shipyard, but also the Crew being available in the Bulletin Board. . . What a chore! it took forever, a bit like Naval progression, now (1.0-1.2).
Elite Dangerous is much more like the original, and it's better for it! Hell, the original game was hideously difficult, success was so hard to achieve, it made it that much sweeter! We so far can only land at Starports; like the original.
In my mind; Ships named after snakes were more graceful and elegant (+ the Gekko - Lizard). The ships introduced in Frontier were largely named after birds; Eagle (mkI, mkII & mkII) Osprey, Hawk, Kestrel, Falcon etc.. They lost the grace and elegance, they looked different, granted, but offered nothing to distinguish from each other. All of them tiny and largely useless (the throwaway ships that Rowander speaks of)
Frontier did have some better ships in there too; like the Panther Clipper, Imperial Courier, Imperial Trader, Puma Clipper, the Lion Transport and the Transporter. . . and of course. . . The Tiger Trader (all of the good ones were traders oriented - the game had nowhere near enough combat!)
@ Rich Bramwell - If I remember right; The Condas cargo bay could handle the mass of the Krait hulls, but they wouldn't fit through the cargo hatch! XD. Memory is Hazy! Their hulls weighed in about 65t - more than twice the Sidewinder!
Lots of ships in the original game lacked hyperspace drives (?) - Including the Sidewinder! I might be wrong but in order of size/mass/threat; Sidewinder > Gekko > Adder > Krait/Mamba > Moray Star Boat > Viper > Cobra mk I > Cobra mk III > Asp mkII > Fer-De-Lance > Boa > Python > 'Conda. . . Thargoid/Thargon.
It was awesome to have loads of different manufacturers in the older games. . . gave the feeling of a dirty underworld, that fit with smuggling, black market and piracy - That the major factions control was just illusion and pretense. The idea that the Mamba was a racing ship that was stolen and had weapons fitted to it, later a cargo bay; gave more of a backyard disruptive, gorilla industry, steampunkt vibe. There was something awesome about it - lots of story and narrative there. Similar with the Gekko and Krait. Or maybe my imagination was a lot more fertile as a seven year old.
Now we choose between Lakon and De Lacy. . . Because they've bought out the small back yard builders - *Sigh*
I'd love to see some (I mean the good ones) of the legacy ships make it to the game; Imagine if you only see Gekkos/Kraits as always in a wing, never alone, like schools of fish. Attack one, you've got to fight them all. Or only in Alliance systems or aligned to particular small factions, in particular systems. I'd also love to see some of the Frontier aspects too, like the Long Range Cruiser and the Lynx Bulk Carrier (kind of trade/transport equivalents of the capital ships) etc. as well as NPC only ships like the Lifter etc. especially if we could see them being used to construct new Starports, or traveling between the planet surface and the orbiting Starports.
Please bring Back:
- Tiger Trader (kind of like a bigger Asp - All rounder, Combat/Trade oriented, turret mounts - takes a lot more flak)
- Cobra mkI (Slightly smaller, older brother of the mkIII - different weapon mounts? Two med, one small?)
- Mamba (just because it's awesome and has a story behind it. . . Faster than the Cobra & Eagle. . . Better armed than the Eagle. . . Could be a really rare antique that is still awesome, only available in backstreet Alliance systems)
- Krait (same as above ^ with fixed or intergral missile/torpedo launcher mounts, in addition to user specified hardpoints?)
- Gekko (A step-up from the Sidewinder that is not the Hauler! Rapid! With Raptor teeth paint flaking off, as standard - Like it had been sat in the police impound for a century of two

- Lynx Bulk Carrier (So big it can't/doesn't dock and is not Commander controllable?)
- Puma Clipper (Federal Haulage/Mining Vessel, that can handle it'self)
- Constrictor (like a scaled up Hauler? - More speed/size/manouvrability/defence/creature comforts than the Lakon Type 6).
It would also be cool to see escape pods for Commanders (human players). . . After their ship is destroyed, it exits - like a streak of light that flashes off in the direction of the last system/station they docked at. . . ?
I dunno, just some ideas, I guess.
