man-made mining tunnels?

i just tuned into a star citizen stream and saw that. how about adding this to odyssey as well? i'm aware that with the current planet tech, procedurally generated caves are not a thing. but it should be possible to craft mining shafts/tunnels/whatnot manually. have some sort of mining building be the entrance.

what i noticed in odyssey is the lack of variety. there's a station layout that looks basically the same for any station and there's ground bases that have different layouts, but interiors look all very similar. so i thought mining tunnels would add some variety there and would also add interesting possibilities. mining is a big profession in the game. but it's currently not utilized for on-foot content. let's hope that 1) mining will get added in the future and 2) hope for more variety in general.

This is almost asking for base building... Which would be more interesting to me.

I dont like the idea. This is not SC,SE or Deep Rock Galactic

why is that similar to base building? i'm not asking for tunnels the players can create. i'm talking about static, or somewhat generated, tunnels the game puts on a planet.

Can't really see it bringing much. How much could you realistically mine on foot? How would you carry it?

It brings a sort of adventure on its own, venturing into unknown mining tunnels. In search of treasure.
We could find diamonds and gems down there, .. or death! ;)

If they also were procedurally generated we could have lots of them, all with different layouts.

think a bit outside of the constraints of the current game. obviously, you wouldn't even be able to carry a single ton of anything around when you're on foot. currently, 1t is the lowest amount you can put in your cargo. you need to expand the idea of cargo and transfer it into the odyssey expansion where you no longer are just a ship, but a person. what can you actually find on-foot in a mining tunnel? some sort of pristine minerals/crystals/whatnot. of course materials would also fit. perhaps expand the exobiology aspect when in caves. find weird lifeforms that live under the ground.

Yep to weird lifeforms that live under the ground..

These giant tunnels in South America aren't caves – they’re prehistoric burrows.

If EDO had content placed underground and discoverable by a dirtlegs scanner of some sort . . .
I've found laying pipe to be incredibly fun, to my surprise, thanks to DRG. Imagine if we could detect deposits of new and incredibly rare resources under planet surfaces in our ships. Once landing at the appropriate site, you would teleport into your dirtlegs and use a scanner to find spots of "suitably soft" ground that allows for mining. This would prevent entire planets being Swiss cheese candidates. After mining deep enough, having worked your way around hard deposits and some hazards, you come to the deposit. At this point, you run a pump line up to your ship to begin extraction. These site would be depletable, incenctivizing CMDRs to explore the galaxy looking for new mining spots planet side.

This could be used to implement exceedingly fresh FPS content.
Deep Thargoid nests that can be detected and drilled down into . . .

I would buy EDO for that alone. Take my $60, please and thank you. EDO would suddenly be competing in a niche of gaming that has very few competitors. I would be salivating as an Explorer everyime I scanned a planet in FSS, crossing my fingers for planetside subsurface anomalies. I could barely care less about seeing that a planet has static plants to scan.
