Man VR has ruined this game for me

Yep, we‘ve all been there - and most of us, including me, stayed there.
To be honest, VR ruined monitor gaming for me. I haven‘t bought or played any game on a monitor, since the Oculus CV1 launched 3 years ago. And i am glad, that i made this jump, as gaming became a true experience, instead of a daily time waster / binge entertainment system.
My playtime reduced itself to one to three sessions a week, not longer than three hours each. In the end, i got a lot of more spare time for RL and a much higher quality of gaming, all thanks to VR.

My experience with VR is very similar to your own with the exception that I pretty much stopped 2D gaming after getting my HMZ-T1 HMD and adding rudimentary headtracking tracking to it. It was barely VR but enough for me to see what the future had in store which I followed up by purchasing the DK1, DK2, CV1 and the Vive Pro. I'm currently waiting for my Index to arrive.... I fell out love with 2D gaming after first using stereo 3D active shutter glasses on an old high refresh CRT, since then it has always been a path to finding better immersion for me. I purchased DMC 5 when it came out as back in the day I loved those games, sad to say it only held my attention for about an hour, pretty much like the last Zelda & Mario games. 3 game franchises I really used to enjoy but they can no longer keep me captivated enough to keep playing.

There is no way I can go back either and there isn’t much I play at all that isn’t in VR now.

Don’t think I have played ED on a monitor for over 2 years. Last time I did it just seemed naff in comparison. It’s like the difference between driving around a race track and playing Grand Turismo.

I love VR. It’s almost like having a holodeck :D

I tried ED on a flat monitor the other day as I wanted to write some notes while kitting up for my first attempts at deep core mining. It was rubbish! Everything looks so small and, obviously, flat. I could have been piloting anything as all I could see was a very small flat HUD. Space stations looked tiny with a letterbox that looked like, well a letterbox rather that a huge hangar opening.

When I started I hated the Eagle but when I got the Oculus I was blown away, same with the Courier.

However I AM able to go back.... Only because I started on PS4 and found a great squadron, if it were cross-play (for real) I'd be in the same boat as you guys.

I can explore in 2D, purely so I can use the Orrery with ease. Although as soon as I find something or just land I have to go back into VR.

Plus, before getting VR I’d hear Cmdr Exigeous saying on his stream time and again how he had to go into VR for combat and just didn’t get it. Now I simply can’t fight if I’m not in VR, it’s way too much of a disadvantage.

Considering the money spent upgrading my gear plus the headset it’s still the best money I’ve ever spent in gaming. Amazing.

I haven't taken the VR plunge yet but I am really considering getting an Oculus Rift S. I currently use a 50" 4K monitor and Thrustmaster Cougar HoTaS. What bothers me is how on earth do you manage the keyboard for message screens etc and the buttons on your sticks?

I use VR most of the time myself, except when I'm doing something that requires me to look up information from EDDB or Inara on my laptop located next to me and my gaming PC. It's a PITA to do that with VR because I have to lift the goggles, and then use the monitor output to input the system I need to get to that I looked up from EDDB or Inara.

Now that I'm headed outside of the bubble, I won't need those external resources so it's 100% VR for the time being.

You quickly learn where all the buttons are on a HOTAS without looking at them. You can also use voice attack. Typing is another story. I basically just don’t though if I needed to I’d peak through the nose gap to see the keys. The Rift S doesn’t really have one though so I have to lift it up to type stuff in the map. I’m hoping they create a way to map a short cut key to the pass though camera but they haven’t yet. You can only do that quickly with a touch controller.

For the message part I’d much rather be a Billy no mates in VR than be able to easily chat on a flat screen :)
