Game Discussions Manor Lords, Bring me a beer my good man....

Someone on reddit pointed out to me that by building the manor to get the skip meals policy was counter productive, since the manor adds 2 families, who eat more food.

Silly me. Making the peasants starve just so i could have a nice big house.
No, I mean plain bread, no topping? Shameful display.

Finally, and at the third time of trying, I'm starting to get in to this game.

I'm still not sure that it's vibe is fully resonating with me, but I'm starting to feel its charm.

What was helpful was watching the first part of a four hour duration 'zero-to-city play-through' on youtube. This rather suggests that (for this player) a bit more hand-holding would have been helpful at the start.

However, as it stands, an early access game from a solo developer, it is a very impressive piece of work, and it seems for now to have broken the spell that Valhiem has/had over me (where I didn't enjoy the Mistlands update that much and am finding Ashlands similarly tiresome).

Need any advice, just give me a shout. I've played it extensively and know how almost everything works.

The main issue you can run into later with big towns is marketplace distribution. Its a bit wonky with large cities. Also once you get into a population in the thousands the game can start to break down, so don't go crazy with huge cities.

Also, turn off raiders until you get the hang of things and if you have the off-screen baron enabled, set him to reactive, not aggressive.

Bandits are a pro and a con. They will steal your stuff from time to time, but they are a great source of early income as well when you take out their camps.

Regarding starting resources, anything can work but i do recommend restarting if you get a rich stone deposit, as you don't need that much stone and it can't be made an everlasting deposit like iron and clay can be.

Deer/Hunting Grounds currently have an issue in that the deer will wander far from there. You can reduce the chance of this by pausing at the start of the game and putting a huge field over the red circle where the hunting grounds are. They can still wander, but less likely.

Just as an aside... I very rarely have in-game music enabled, but in this case I do, and it seems to work and fit quite nicely, unobtrusively... but then I quite like vocal/moody 'churchy-music'...

YMMV
It's kinda rare seeing someone appreciate in-game music. I think it's a important thing in game experience.

Quick question: Is this game as slow as I'm feeling it to be? Even with accelerated time, everything seems to take an age.

Or am I playing it 'wrong', or does the pace pick-up when you reach some critical mass/size? (I've only just reached the 'large village' stage.)

I'm not quite feeling 'the rewards' for my'efforts' are justifying the time spent playing it (even if I am enjoying the meditative vibe and music).

Have you zoomed into people standing around talking and the marketplace and listened?

Its very similar to The Settlers in terms of pace. Once you know what you are doing you can spend a lot of the time on either x4 or x12 speed. My first game i played almost entirely at 1x.... yes, it took a very long time.

Early game getting stuff set up and reaching critical mass as it were does take some time until you learn how to be more efficient early game.

I've gone through several interations of starting strategy and I quite like my current one as it gets me my first new family moving in in the second month. Getting more families in quicker and hitting 75% happiness as soon as possible is essential for a quicker start.

I look at the footage and my roleplay instincts tell me to watch out for fire, diseases and bandits. Is fire and disease already in? Everytime I see a peep fetch water at the well I think: cholera. Witch in the woods, imperial mandates, iconoclasm and heresy are 'nother ideas.

Well... I've gone back to Kingdoms and Castles, and would suggest that the developer(s) here take some time out to play this (very simple) game, to consider its pacing.

By comparison Banner Lords feels very flat and veeerrry slooooooow.... albeit it is magnitudes prettier and more complex. It's just not (for me) as good or compelling a game to play. YMMV

...oh, and K&C has dragons... so...

Flat? My chunky gaelic foot warrior bride was everything but flat in my Bannerlords playthrough. Angry Fian led by curvy princess down the hill - chef's kiss. Almost Valkyrie level. Ach, Brunhilde, when can I play with you...
