Mapping NGC 7822 Nebula (It's Black Hole Paradise!)

2F0sgbp.jpg

NGC 7822 Nebula didn't catch my attention until I arrived near the Cave Nebula. NGC 7822 hangs like a scattering of bright diamonds, but that is only apparent as you draw near. From a distance the nebula looks like a large white dot; easily mistakable for a planetary body. Yet whilst it may look quite unremarkable at this view point, it is without doubt one of the wonders of the galaxy.

Once you enter the nebula it is as though you are transported to a different dimension, the first thing that hits you is the blue light of the stars which illuminate your cockpit with vivid shades. All the major systems inside this region contain Class O Blue / White stars. The nebula itself is red and black, the dark areas are in fact so dark that they completely occlude the galactic core. The surrounding space is dark with so few stars that it is actually possible to count them, the absence of the galactic core after its constant presence is striking.

A typical system will often contain multiple stars, and it's not unusual for a system to contain around 10 stars and in some cases many, many more. Such stars will be from a variety of class, and will include the usual white and brown dwarfs. All orbiting in sometimes complex layouts.

Black holes exist in this nebula in abundance, the majority of systems will contain one and some contain two - one of the systems even contained three black holes.

In most cases the black holes orbit at a great distance from the main star, but on occasion unusual and/or uncommon orbits occur. I very nearly lost my ship in the following area as I was so mesmerised by the black hole that I forgot to pay attention to my heat. The heat actually raised up to over 260% and dropped my hull damage down to 69%. I made it out with the use of heat sinks, never take an exploration trip without them! The black hole has a semi-major axis of just 0.05AU, the size of the star and the closeness of the black hole makes it difficult to fly between them without building up heat levels.

Most of the stars in this region are very, very young a few as fresh as 1 million years. I didn't find any stars over the age of hundreds of millions of years, but whatever the age - stars of all types exist in abundance out here.

This area is easily one of the most impressive I have explored so far, much of this was due to the region feeling completely isolated from the rest of space. The lack of stars, and the complete absence of the core left me feeling as though I was in an entirely different realm. For those of you with an Oculus Rift, this place is a truly wonderful experience - it literally is out of this world. In the end I stayed in this region far longer than I have any other nebula - and I made sure to take system maps of all the systems that contained Class O type stars. There are a few systems that require permits so I expect this area to be fully used at some point in the future.

For now, I am off to the next nebula, but this is an area I will be returning to for sure. If your interested in more adventures in NGC 7822 - I chronicled some of them in episode 15 of my Exploring Elite: Dangerous series.

Another one to add to the list :) excellent work, I really appreciate enjoy posts like your's

EDIT - Wow! just checked it out in the Galaxy map, that area looks stunning. And it's not too far from SOL

It's very cool, if you're going make sure you have a Jump range over 20LY, preferably over 25 or you won't get there, it's between the spiral arms of the Galaxy and stars are well spread out

Just noticed that too. Would have like to have used my Type-9 but don't think it will be possible. Will have to use the ASP

There are a few voids around that can cause detours even at 30ly, but mostly above the nebula. If you're coming from the ecliptic you should be fine.

I took a trip out there recently, though I don't do exploration videos. :)

I found it difficult in a cobra with 21 LY range, I had to turn back and find a better route a couple of times, should be fine in an asp with A rated FSD

After Barnards area, I went there in my 30ly Hauler! Got some vids somwhere, a Must see for any Explorer! Amazing systems, full of stars. It may show 2 or 3 + a Black hole, but when you scan the whole place lights up with more young stars!

Love it!

So I managed to squeeze just under 20LY with elite shipyard http://www.edshipyard.com/#/L=30Y,mpX0Wg0Wg,2-A0A09Y8SA06u9s,5440Pe0O4mpX2UI

Would it be a hopeless effort trying to take my T9 out there? I can take the ASP but I prefer flying my T9

I dunno, some of the jumps I made were over 20LY and that was to the nearest star, I found it was better to go about 150 LY underneath it and fly up. there are hardly any stars on the same level. I wouldn't risk it with less than 20. It might be possible but it will be frustrating if you get there and can't make the last few jumps

If you must use a Trade ship a T6 can jump 30 LY with the right setup, I used one to go to barnards loop.

Cheers mate, yeah I'll just use the ASP then, am not a big fan of these quick maneuvering ships (except in combat) I know I am in the minority, but I like how the T9 feels with a HOTAS and pedals.

I just left there myself. So many stars to explore and examine. I had good fun taking some nice screenshots there. Off to the Bubble Nebula, though!

Nice post. I'm heading there myself, I'm about 150Ly outside right now trying to find a way in with my Cobra (a bit over 22Ly jump range). I'm currently heading around the back side, probing for a route (TWSS). This will be the fifth nebula on my current exploration trip having arrived here via the Sadr Region, Pelican Nebula, North American Nebula, and Elephants Trunk Nebula. I've been tempted to head back to civilisation a couple of times and return with an Asp with A FSD just to make the route planning a bit easier. Planning these trips will be so much easier after FD release v1.1 and its 1000Ly jump planner.

I thought about going to the Bubble Nebula but then went in the opposite direction. Let me know what it looks like there - seems there are many stars that are very close to the nebula, I was a bit doubtful how close it would be possible to get.

But did you make it in the end?

It s good to have a nice jump range when goin there, i was there with my ASP but since the nebula is quite far on top of the galaxy resulting in low system density i wouldn t try to go there without at least 25/30 Ly Jump range.

Btw totally agree with OP, this place is a big slap in your face if you like exploring and the view of the galaxy from up there is gorgeous ;)
Here s some quick preview of what waits for you up there.

I ended up about 50ly away on xmas eve. I had a B fsd cobra and was devestated I could not find a route.....I have the nebula pictured from every angle but inside it :/

I was guessing it was kinda difficult to enter there without a high jump range, curious how much jump range you had?
Sry for that it must have been frustrating but at the same time you will enjoy it even more when you ll be back there ;)
