Marianne's Journey to Arcadia

Sometimes I really wish FD had been able to put more effort into making the galaxy a lived-in place. "Marianne's Journey to Arcadia" is a station in LTT 606. Cool name, means nothing. At least give us a backstory, like she was a war orphan on her way to meet her new family in Arcadia and something something something founded a dynasty something something something eaten by thargoids.

Part of the problem here is, many of these stations were named by kickstarters/donors. They paid money to get that name in the game. In a sense, FD doesn't have the right to add "backstory" to the name because the name doesn't really belong to them, it wasn't their idea to put it there.

Sure, FD could have made up a backstory. There's nothing to stop the rest of us from making up a backstory for it, and maybe if we repeat it enough, or FD look upon it favourably, then our fan-fiction backstory can become canonical lore. But what if the original donor doesn't like the backstory, and demands it be removed or the name deleted?

As an example, let's pick a different star system where the backstory is known, or can at least be guessed at: Bast. The name of the only planet, "THFC-Est 1882" and the station that orbits it (Hart Station) are both named in honour of an English football team, though the names are tangential enough for those not in the know to notice (the Tottenham Hotspurs Football Club was established in 1882 and their home ground is White Hart Road).

Now, we can make up a story about how it got this name, preferably a story that doesn't involve 1500-year-old and presumably long-defunct soccer clubs: perhaps how the colony was originally founded in 2289 by a dozen survivors from a wrecked ore freighter, the "THFC-Est 1882", owned by the Tau Horologii Freight Consortium and captained by Bernadette Hart. But would the backer who paid 500 pounds to allocate these names, be happy with this backstory effectively removing the tribute to their football team they had intended to create?

To me, it is far sadder (and more unrealistic) that the vast majority of Earth-like planets in the game still have only a generic name, despite some of them being so close to Sol that they've surely been colonized for over a millennium and thought up a unique name for themselves by now.
